REPOST..I'm interested in hearing the opinions advocates of "Americanizing" people...

It has made me increasingly saddened by all the veiled (and not so veiled) racist and prejudicial comments I've read in these comments. While I am glad that people are open (I've always preferred the devil I know instead of the devil I don't)...I can't believe in a country where immigration is the only way that over 99% of you are here is so jaded. If we really want to think about this issue properly...we should all change our names to Native American names and learn to speak THEIR tongues/languages. Anglos (from varied European countries) came to this country and not only killed of the people who lived here but made everyone adapt to THEIR ways. Since that time anyone who came here was told to adapt or be mistreated, enslaved, killed, etc.(slaves, Ellis island immigrants, etc.) Can I ask what is an American name...because anything ending in "kos" is clearly Greek (or a country nearby), "ski" clearly Polish/maybe German...so what is American enough a last name?

Hmmm. What makes you think that they are referring to you? Was it that obvious even to you?

Why do they keep coming? They must be nuts. And if you are guilty of mistreating the Indians give your land back to them.

Look, you wrong. Look at this way. American is system based on majority. We're becoming the majority. When we become the majority, the spanish will become representative of most Americans, so the spanish will then be the right language. You see? You must have more babies than us. You are not as many as before. It is like that man darwin says about natural selection. Its not our fault. Its not your fault. It just is reality of situation. We speak the spanish, we have more of the babies, we pushing you out by the accident. America is proper for seeing this. The majority is represented rightly.
If you don't like, then you can go to law and change and make the english right language. If you just sit there and complain and do nothing, then be quiet. You don't take part in the system of the government...BUT I DO. I go to the vote. I read the news. I pay attention to the politics. You just sit here and complain and do nothing about it...just like majority of you...enjoy while lasts, soon the spanish will be the right language and the majority will be us.
You are sadly mistaken.

I think the language thing is their personal responsibility. If they couldn't understand the history questions on the citizenship forms, they fail. That is that.
The don't think that the tax payers are responsible for those who don't speak the language. This is the family responsibility.

I never said anything about white people.
You need to keep track of just who it is you're replying to.

Educate yourself will ya. Just because people are "white" doesn't mean their native language is English.

If you choose to become a citizen of MY COUNTRY (USA) learn to speak my language.

Nope my family was brought here as slaves actually. I'm good! Why did your family come here since you say that you are a 7th generation immigrant? I wouldn't suspect you'd call them nuts or would you? The point remains exactly what this person is saying we should do...is what the Anglos who came here did NOT do. They did NOT assimilate, they changed the entire culture, language and land. So if he is trying to Americanize the country shouldn't we go back to Native Americans as the sounding off board?

Look dude, only a few folks think we should "Americanize" names and what not, I do not, but I do think that many immigrants need to make a call about what loyalty they have to here and to the country of origin. One of the great things about America is that you can have a ski, cia, Mc or O' on your name and you are still an American. America is an ideal, not hard to embrace and we do have a common culture. Is a lot of it based on Anglo, Protestant, Free Market, etc..? yeah but it works. My ancestors came here and adapted and that is how is should continue. Heritage/Ancestor knowledge is great but you have to be loyal to here first and understand that the guy on Lincoln St. in Boston is your countryman, not some guy in Dublin. That the guy in Houston, TX is your countryman, not some guy in Mexico City, Mexico. That the guy on Penn Ave in D.C. is your Countryman, not some guy in London, England. Etc..etc..etc...That is all most people on here are saying. Also, most of the angry posts were aimed at the Exposed Troll "Garcia", some of mine included.

I was making statement about statistics saying white people would be minority, not saying YOU were one who said this. I was making point. When we are in the majority, everyone will have to speak the spanish. If they do not, majority will not be represented.

There are two ways to be a US citizen. Be born one or take the citizenship test. To pass the citizenship test, you must proove proficency in English. Unless you are born in a US Territory, like Guam or Puerto Rico, you should be able to speek English id you are a citizen.

And therein lies the problem. Most of the people who come here from Puerto Rico continue to refuse to speak english. Now their kids are illiterate due to this.

Employers or bosses do not have a right to hear all the conversations that their employees have in front of them, and it is not BAD MANNERS (except in your book) to do so. You have lived a very cloistered lived with little true diversity in your workplace.

I have colleagues from other countries at times have conversations between each other in their own language, and I do so at times also. I take no offense when I am excluded, and I intend no offense in excluding others.

Regarding "I am of the firm belief that English should be the primary language in the United States. In order to gain citizenship in this country, one must know how to read, write and speak English."
-- I completely agree but while the government of Canada urged and assisted immigrants to learn English and the culture, the United States used not to do that - in part because a good percentage of employers (specially small factory owners) were more interested in having employees who did not know their rights (by not knowing the language or the culture) to take advantage of them, but also because of stupidity among so many.

Regarding "People who come here from another country have always learned the native language."
-- Mike Hayden is full of malarkey. Here we have a TYPICAL case of how much of the local political leadership across this country is composed by a lot of KNOW-NOTHINGS! This fool could not do a little research on the internet, or could not make a call to someone who knew!
-- The last report I read about ten years ago claimed that the rate of learning English had held fairly steady over the decades, and I suspect that the rate is probably better now because of the internet.

Regarding "While I am not a zealot and recognize the United States is a melting pot of hundreds, if not thousands of nationalities, languages, customs and cultures, I am very protective of the mother tongue."
-- It should be more than the melting pot that it really is. The melting pot concept presupposed a level of thinking that neither the natives nor the new comers truly really have. We are worldwide still a very savage and primitive human race. It is difficult to achieve that synthesis when people significantly lack the ability to synthesize.
-- We have more of a quilt than a melting pot.

Regarding "The argument is made by some whose parents and grandparents came to this country from Greece, Portugal, Poland, Italy, France and elsewhere. Lowell has a strong Asian population. They have all had to assimilate by learning to speak English. Many of these people are fortunate enough to know how to speak two languages."
-- Based on what I have read and from my observation about Lowell and other areas, there have been and there are a good number of immigrants who still stick to their native tongue and who barely know English, and NOT all of them (including the Asian population) have assimilated and learned English. Some definitely have NOT.
-- I applaud the efforts of the current administration to facilitate the learning of English by immigrants. It is very important.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Virgo

If something is weighing on your mind it will start to affect your health, Virgo. It might make you feel tired or depressed, or it could dominate your thoughts. You know what you should do about it, of course, but it seems like too much effort or you want to pretend that it doesn't exist. Unfortunately, this escapist attitude won't make the problem go away and might even make it more tricky by the time you finally decide to tackle it.
