"What I love about this country is I get to take my culture with me." This is a problem, Mexico is a filthy and disgusting place wrought with corruption and non-education. And they want to bring all that here!!!! NO!!!! See here's the deal.....Viva Mexico IN MEXICO!!!! Not here. Fix your own damn country and stop trying to turn America into Mexico. First, Garcia isn't really Mexican, he is baiting you. Second, if you really are a German immigrant (which I doubt) then please bring your Nazi views home with you. Third, Mexican immigrants DO learn English. Many studies have proven it. But it often takes a generation, which so many of you refuse to accept. Since more Mexicans arrive each year, there will continue to be immigrants who are not yet fluent.

They can and should learn English and not making them speak it enables their being stuck in poverty. My viewpoint is much kinder and concerned and caring and beneficial to them than your viewpoint is. You seem to want to stick them in poverty. You seem to be a bigot. The story we are here to comment on is about Mexican immigrants with jobs at a hotel who were told to, among other thigs, change their names. They are NOT illegal. They ARE learning English. You and most of the others here are one issue people and you are the ones who assume every immigrant is illegal, especially the Mexicans. I have every hope for them and every belief that they will succeed in America just like generations of immigrants before them (including Mexicans who came a 100 years ago). Historians see the patterns here, bigots always think the "new" immigrants are terrible and nothing like "our ancestors." Read some books by Reimers, Dinnerstein, Takei, etc. It's not brain surgery.

You will also see in a post above that I state that the name change requirement is way over the top. But it still remains that bigots like you, who feel that immigrants shouldn't be required to learn the English language, do so to keep them in poverty, apparently believing either that they can't learn it or that keeping them dependent is good for liberalism. Either way, you are no friend of immigrants.

Garcia wrote: <quoted text> You are the one who is fool. Mexico is beautiful place full of life and goodness. This is America and yes, I do get to take culture with me. Habla espanol? True, but only if you are the one pointing the gun and making the demands, then you'll see the fruits of bounty. The top 1% makes a killing off the bottom 99%. Sure, a nice gated fortress type home. However, isn't kidnapping one the the major problems there? I guess thats the bottom 99% trying re-coup after the top 1% made a killing. Honestly, I there are beautiful places to look at in remote parts of Mexico. But a horrible place to live. Between the Federalis, local police and rampant gangs, I'm not surprised about the Mexican invasion. Problem is, America does not want the Mexican mindset here. What is normal to you is appalling to us. But, they don't know any better or different.

"Mexico is a beautiful place." "Mexico is a wonderful place." "The US is unfair."
Blah! Blah! Blah!
If Mexico is so "beautiful" and "wonderful" why are there millions of Native Mexicans that risked their lives to to the land of the "unfair?" If America is that bad, go back, no one's stopping you. If your culture is so great that you want to take it with you and your country is so beautiful and wonderful, why did you leave it in the first place?
Don't intrude on another country, making demands and insisting that they change to accomodate you. You acclimate to the new country, they don't acclimate to you. If you don't like it, there's always the option of returning to your wonerful and beautiful country that you felt the need to escapre from in the first place.

Uh...the article we are all blabbing about does not say these workers are from Mexico nor whether they are legal or illegal. Check your history books or Google: Folks in New Mexico where Taos is, most often trace their roots to Spain and the land grants they own as given by the King of Spain: "On 23 April 1706 Francisco Cuervo y Valdés, who replaced Governor Vargas in 1704, wrote to the king of Spain and to the viceroy of New Spain he had founded a new villa in New Mexico. Cuervo y Valdés named the community after the viceroy, Fernandez de la Cueva, Duque de Alburquerque." Whereas most of us Lowellians can only trace our immigrant roots to the late 1800s or early 1900s, Hispanics here can go back to the 1600s. I'd venture to guess there are more "Mexicans", legal and illegal, in New England than in NM. Please review #41 this thread. Whitten was from out of state and only came to Taos in July and obviously did not look into its current/historical ambiance. Really, when we get right down to it, how can we let an Irishman go around with the name Barack? Would Y'all refuse a margarita made with Jose Cuervo?

I agree, this is America and the language spoken here is English (and I'm a supporter of it being made the OFFICIAL language). However, asking someone to change their name is stupid.
Actually it reminds me of when calling Customer Support and having the person answering the phone having a very heavy Indian accent and telling me their name is Andy or Mary. Yeah right.
And for those who speak more than one language...never assume the people around you don't know what you are saying. We had a huge issue here at work with the cleaning crew speaking Spanish and saying some really offensive things about people around them and they were caught when someone understood them and went off on them.

While I disagree on the "official" part, I agree that it is rude and risky to speak about people right in front of them. I have friends and acquaintences who have done this and I've been mortified. I have asked them to stop, pointing out that others know what they are saying. Some still don't care. I care. If I wouldn't say it to your face, I'm not going to saying in another language within earshot. But most of the time we are talking about ourselves.

Changing names is ridiculous.
Not bothering to learn the language of the country you move to is stupid and self-limiting.
ILLEGAL immigration is a criminal act and we shouldn't be catering in any way to ILLEGAL immigrants. LEGAL immigration should be encouraged and we should be offering helping hands to LEGAL immigrants as they adjust to this country's culture.

The topic that the article addresses goes directly to Mexican Immigration, some of these folks are not native born and some are native born Americans that are working for the gentleman in question, if you read more on the guy and his business that is what they are talking about. That aside, most of the posts, mine included (most, not all) are aimed at the poster "Garcia", read his posts and then the others will make a bit more sense I think.

I don't know of any school in the area, not even a private one, where this is possible. Could be wrong, but I think he is trying to piss people off and he's probably some a mutt.
