Movie theater would not work, it might do well at first but once the new wears off it'll close. Movies are very expensive to show.

Ya got to have something to offer to get the travelers attention if you want them to stop here.

You either have to have some interesting places to stop and shop and eat or you have to organize periodic activities that will draw outsiders in for a purpose.

The old time soda bar and Pam's "Hateful Hussy" diner are both novelties that get the attention of people going through town and travelers will stop because of those two businesses.

What else is here? Nothing different from every other town in the state... we got a Mexican restaurant, a doughnut shop, an ALCO, but so does everyone else. You got to be different, got to have something INTERESTING and FUN to get people's attention and get them to stop.

Heck, even the trashed out flea market on that vacant lot gets traffic on the weekends, even out-of-townees stop by and snoop around.

What are some events, festivals, gatherings that might work...?

There are lots of artists and crafts people in the valley, musicians are everywhere around here, hang-gliders, NDNs, N'tl Forrest users,.... lots and lots of resources, but not much organization or marketing going on.....

You're asking the wrong question, why do you want to stop people who are on their way to somewhere else?
Just to piss them off?
You should ask:
'How can we make Talihina the destination for more people?'

Change the name of the town, get rid of the dopers and rundown houses. Now that would be a good start.

Any suggestions are falling on deaf ears. Have to start at the top with all new town management. The ones we have don't want change or to rock their boat so to speak.

No it didn't fall on deaf ears, but we do want to reserve the individuals rights and have a free business enterprise system as long as all state and local laws are being followed. It is not the councils place to start a flea market on private property. In fact we have the start of one already in town. We encourage new businesses and assist were we can, as we did with a new business last night.

Legally, as a city we have the right to set zoning ordinances, enforce state and local laws and require business permits. If a new business meets all of these guidlines there isn't much control the city council has over letting a business come in to town. Case in point. I was approached by individuals against the tatoo parlor coming into town. After researching our zoning laws, there was nothing to prevent it. True, the zoning laws could have been amended to exclude tatoo parlors, but look what a valuable asset we would have lost. It brings in lot's of visitor to our Town. Funny side of this, one of those against it coming to town, is now a client of theirs!

No business looks forward to the competitor opening up across the street from them, but I know of no legal precedent where a city has only allowed one of every type of business in town. Do we really only want to have one choice for pizza, burgers, donuts, flowers.... I do sympathize with the business owner though. As a fellow business person I do want to remind them that competition is not all bad. It forces us to work a little harder, offer a little better customer service, and to look down deep within our business and come up with a new business plan and offer something new. I have been in business over 25 years in this town and there has been lots of business open which compete with mine. They come and go, we remain. It is not because of city ordinances. It is because we stay true to our business plan, readjust as we need and keep offering the best service we can. Interesting fact, usually when there is another nursery business in the area, it increases our sales. Why? It goes back to something I learned in the National Main Street Program called Clustering. They suggest you develop business clusters or districts for the different industries. They have found when you put all your restaurants in one area, they attract more customers to that area and all the businesses thrive! I do not think Talihina is big enough for this concept, but it is interesting.

So if you read this long speach, I thank you. If you have more questions or want to discuss the issue farther, I will be happy to talk with you.

I thought this was a dig at the red lights outside of town on the bridges where they have yet to start any real work on them.
