Woman wins $1 million on penny slots

Makes you think twice next time you walk by a penny and think "eh it is just a penny"

So how long do you figure one spin takes? I'll be generous and say she pulled the arm once every 30 seconds. The article doesn't say she won any other payouts, so I'll assume she didn't.

So she put in $360 or so and won $1 million. Just kind of puts the winnings into perspective, it's not like she got a 10,000,000,000% return on her investment. More like 300,000% return. That's a decent amount, to be sure, but she could have just as easily walked away with -$360.
Plus you need to realize that in order for this to be a profitable venture, the casino needs to take that $1 million out of the pockets of the chumps that didnt see the jackpot.

Moral of the story, even when you hear about someone winning millions, gambling doesn't pay. The only reason the casino has all those flashing lights and press releases is to bring in more idiots to fill up the machines again.

Oh, and she was probably pulling way faster than once every 30 seconds. My bet is she fed in 20s and pulled 6-7 times before refeeding again (once every minute or so). So more likely she blew closer to $1200 in her quest to win a million. (75,000% return)

And when she got back to her grandchildren she left in the car while gambling and told them the news they were elated!

At least she is not an illegal alien. An illegal won 8 million dollars in 1998 in Laughlin, Nevada, and got to KEEP IT! At least she has a right to be here.

no, just a person that understands statistics.
the risk of gambling isn't worth the possible rewards in my mind. I also am a fairly stressful person when it comes to managin my money, so I do not get any entertainment from gambling.
other people are free to gamble, and i think its fine. if they want to essentially "spend" their money at a gambling establishment, it isn't really much different than when i pay $30 to go see a baseball game. I put my money into an entertaining evening. More power to them that they at least have a chance of recouping that money at the end of the night.

but there are lots of problems with gambling addictions, where people borrow money and gamble it away, especially when they have a family to care for. And it doesn't always work out as peachy as it did for Clark Griswald in Vegas Vacation.
I would bet much of the time, people win small amounts that barely keep them in the black when you look at how much they've lost in the time they play. Sometimes you get huge returns, I just prefer safer investments.

And I actually think it's very hypocritical of those "GOD FEARIN SOULS" that condemn gambling then host Bingo in their basements.(10% gets donated back to the church you know :P)

You are absolutely correct. You left out the part about the fact most of those large progressive jackpots are not paid completely but on 20 years of payments...like the lotto...

There is 'problem' gambling just like 'problem' drinking...usually a symptom of other things in someone life...but having fun, spending what you can afford doesn't harm others.

Regulated gambling is better than illegal or offshore gambling. It doesn't effect driving your car like drugs do.

I used to count money at a major casino in Nevada, and I can tell you that gambling for some people is just as bad as booze or drugs. The casinos have tightened up the slot machines by making them electronic, and table games have higher minimum bets, and many rules have changed. So in this day and age, if you are gambling with intention of making any money, you may have a problem. One should never go into a casino with more money in their pocket than they can afford to lose.
