You don't earn a right to kill someone, and while I sympathize with her, I think someone who has had a loved one murdered probably operates from an emotional point of view rather than a logical or moral one.
I don't believe in the death penalty. I'm sure if someone killed my son, I would want them killed. I don't think those points are in conflict.
My current position is based on what I believe is morally right after my lifetime of thought and debate.
The other position is what I would probably think when put in a situation of unbelievable emotional anguish and loss, the most intense negative emotion I could imagine. I wouldn’t fault someone for wanting to kill the murderer in that situation, but I hardly think that someone in that position is operating as a thoughtful, rational, moral human being.
There are valid arguments for the death penalty. However,"how would you feel" is not one of them.

Although, again, I think if you've had a loved one killed, your reaction would automatically be "Kill him!" rather than "What is the moral and best route for society?" Emotion does cloud judgment.
For that matter, I'd bet you can find many people who have had a loved one killed by a distracted or drunk driver who would want the death penalty in that case. Although sad and horrific, I think most agree that the death penalty is probably too extreme in those cases. But the victims' emotions wouldn't be ruled by reason.
I do think there are other decent arguments for the death penalty that I struggle with, I just don't think the "How would you feel?" argument holds much weight.
