This award was presented by the us office of mining reclamation and enforcement and i guess they could possibly be non biased, but it would have been interesting to see if they would have still gotten the award if the E.P.A. had anything to do with giving it since that is who MTR must answer to NOW.

This award was awarded by the Miners health, safety ,and training and The West Virginia Coal Association.Dont know if they could be un-biased or not.Cant see them shooting their own down.Would have been interesting if the E.P.A. was in attendance cause alot of the strip permits from the past that are currently being looked at in a more scrupulous way and some will not happen.I know of 2 that have been completely withdrawn because they now dont cut the mustard.

This one talks about some very good facts on coal. And we all know that coal is doing it but it does not go into any details or research that has been done on what MTR affects such as vegetation, water quality, air quality, topographical elevations before and after, wildlife before and after a MTR site, etc, etc. It basically tells us about coal. And i dont think those people that wrote it are to eager to look at it all from a scientific standpoint on the actual impact that it may or may not have.

Register-Herald - Beckley op-ed

"Say what you will about mountaintop mining, and we will not debate the issue here, except to say it is legal, employs more than 6,000 workers, produces an annual payroll of at least $300 million, generates another 24,000 related jobs and funds state coffers to the tune of $175.6 million just in severance taxes. And it’s helped West Virginia weather the severe economic downturn that has crippled other parts of the country.

news look glum for Appalachia but good for the west

Mayfly May Thwart $3 Billion in Coal Mined in U.S. Mountaintops

"The end of mountaintop mining in Appalachia would remove about 70 million tons a year from the market, increasing demand for coal from Colorado, Montana and Wyoming,"

and electricity --

“The EPA’s decision adds further uncertainty for coal producers,” Richard Whiting, chief executive officer of St. Louis, Missouri-based Patriot Coal Corp., said on an Oct. 27 conference call.“If future permits are not granted, an important source of low-cost fuel for electricity will be eliminated.”

deep miners cannot do it alone, these power plants in this day and age need these thin high sulfur coal seems to blend with deep mine coal to get the correct BTU's and sulfur content to run efficiently. which means burning hotter with less coal and emitting less carbon dioxide. this in turn helps keep YOUR cost of electricity lower than anywhere else in the country.

Daily Horoscope for December 8

Aries

You're feeling practical and sensible today, so it's great for getting on with some of the Christmas preparations. The idea of saving money appeals to you now, and if you're browsing around the supermarket looking for festive food you might be so horrified by some of the prices that you decide to make your own instead. This will give you a real feeling of satisfaction.
