Fed Up With KWPD

I am going to start this off by saying that I know the overwhelming majority of police officers are good people who try to do the right thing. Most departments have mostly good officers with one or two bad apples.

But when the hell is Monroe County and the city of Key West going to say enough is enough with this arrogant department? I've read story after story about mistreatment (mostly verbal abuse) of citizens, but now I've had the displeasure of dealing with these people myself.

Last week, I was in Key West and was the victim of a hit and run accident. It was relatively minor; about $1,000 dollars worth. Unfortunately, the damage was on the rear of my car, so I did not notice it until I got home in Big Pine Key. I washed my car that day and knew the damage was not present before going to Key West. I called my insurance company, who told me that I needed a police report. I first called MCSO, but since the hit and run occurred in Key West, I had to file the report with them. Understandable.

First, I called KWPD and asked if I could do the report over the phone. They said no. I had to drive 30 miles back to their department. This was inconvenient, but I can understand that they needed to see the damage for a fair assessment.

I arrived at KWPD and was met by a very young and very rookie officer named David Corey. Officer Corey did everything in his power to avoid writing a police report. In the time it took him to complain about how MCSO didn't do it, question how I knew it happened in Key West, question me 3 more times about how I knew it happened in Key West, and try to tell me that I should just call my insurance company, he could have written the report twice. Finally, after 15 minutes of dealing with this officer's arrogance, I asked for his supervisor. I was appalled at how he refused to tell me who his supervisor was or how he wouldn't call for him. Throughout all this, Officer Corey was rolling his eyes and constantly letting out a loud sigh, making it more than obvious I was an inconvenience to him. At one point, he even said "I have 6 other reports to write." When I told him that all I needed at that point to satisfy my insurance company was a report number, he refused to give me one. To make matters worse, he only asked for me to describe the damage. He refused to walk 50 feet to the parking lot and look at the back of my car. This was the whole reason I couldn't do it over the phone.

Finally, when I got in touch with a supervisor, which I had to track down myself (Sgt Williams, I believe), all he did was back his officer and refuse to hear what I had to say. He was even more arrogant and immature than Officer Corey.

I was the victim here. This whole ordeal was about 5 hours out of my day, compared to the 10 minutes it would have taken him to write a simple report. There is no cause for supposed professionals to act this way. What is with the attitudes of these officers in Key West?

Now, a week later, I have a report number, but no report. I have been told 2 days straight that the report is not approved, so I can't have it. All it needs is a Sgt's signature.

I have never had this sort of run-in with Monroe County. The deputies are leaps and bound more professional than KWPD. Where does KWPD get these people? From what I understand, KWPD pays more than MCSO. If this is case, why can't KWPD get the quality of officers that MCSO has? It must be a supervisor problem that starts at the very top.

By the way, this isn't my first problem with them. This was just the final straw.

From reading these boards, I know there are other Keys residents reading this. Has anyone else had these problems? How do you deal with this sort of thing when the supervisors won't even hear it?

You hit the nail right on the head with this one sentence.

When you have piss-poor supervision, it shows in the line-level subordinates. And KWPD is mostly piss-poor supervision.

KWPD has been a problem for as long as I can remember.

Unfortunately the Supervisor(s) can't baby-sit the arrogant, mean and egotistical officers that patrol our streets .... or change their god-like personalities.

I'm not a criminal, nor have I ever been arrested, but I have been a victim of their chauvinistic crudeness, roughness and abuse of their power.

Not all are bad, but most.

KWPD seems to be the opposite of most departments. In the case of KWPD, the good officers are a minority. If the Sgt mentioned in Fed Up's report is who I think he is, he was previously a security officer on the Navy base. He was an egotistical moron who slept with other men's wives. Now he is a supervisor with KWPD? Scary.

There is a major problem down there that needs to be addressed.

Wow. So far today I've read where the Key West PD are lazy and poorly supervised; in Fort Lauderdale, the police chief is begging the crooked DA not to press charges against his wife who shot the bed where he was sleeping (because he was fooling around on her, and in Nashville, the cops and judges are fixing the tickets of the rich and influential -- while the poor man pays thru the nose. It sure sound like the cops in this country are worthless -- doesn't it???

"Ron" is Robert Krutko. He has been spamming these boards for years, blaming all levels of government for allowing a boat to be taken from him. This was a boat that he fell into arrears of $65,000 over unpaid storage fees. This is why he says cops are corrupt. He does not know the difference between a criminal matter and a civil matter. Google "Robert Krutko" if you are interested.

So responses to him are more on a personal level. Many of us are tired of his B.S. and lies on the internet.

Yes, we all know Robert is full of shite, but the fact remains our law enforcement agencies are corrupt. The original poster's example is just a drop in the bucket.

6. Monroe County Court, Civil Case CAK060000910, Chase Home Finance v. Robert Krutko.....Krutko's Florida Keys home was foreclosed on.

7. Monroe County Court, Civil Case CAK080000678, Robert Krutko v. City of Key West.....Krutko sued the City of Key West and blogged all over the internet that it would be an historic case because he claimed the city allowed his business to fail. Krutko's complaint was dismissed because he failed to show cause, and he never showed up for the hearings. Case Closed.

8. Monroe County Court, Civil Case CAK080000679, Robert Krutko v. Old Town Tours and John Evans.....Krutko claimed Evans ran a dirty business (Hydro-Thunder) and was partly responsible for his failure. Krutko failed to show cause and never showed up for the hearings. Case Closed. Complaint Dismissed.

9. Martin County Court, Civil Case 432008CA000313CA (08000313CA), United Yacht Sales v. Robert Krutko......After months of relentless internet slander and harrassment of United Yachts by Krutko, they sued him for slander/libel. Robert hid from the subpoena, even having his father cover for him once. After 2 months, a private investigator found Krutko at his job, a janitor at a Columbus, OH motel. The subpoena was served. After all the internet slander of United Yachts, Krutko had his chance to show cause in court. He didn't. Krutko never even showed up for the hearings. The court ruled a default judgement for United Yachts. Case Closed. Robert Lost.

10. There are 5 Franklin County civil cases that Robert lost, including a second home foreclosure. Those civil case numbers are: 06CV012693, 90CV010128, 04CV006240, 03CV003250, 03CV003248.

You obviously don't know Robert too well then. He never goes away. He just stops harrassing those that have won lawsuits against him (United Yachts anyone?).

My only obsession is seeing him silenced. His libelous comments are getting way out of control. His business failed and he can't get over it. He has to blame everyone but himself.
