Crawfish Farmers Vote For Harvest Suspension.
“New Orleans to Lake Charles to Shreveport to Houston to Mobile all have the same price change to the farmer on the same morning at the same time”
After seeing wholesale crawfish prices drop sharply in recent weeks, a group of crawfish farmers has voted to stop harvesting two days a week in hopes of tightening supplies. via KALB-TV Alexandria

Maybe OPEC stands for Organization Producing Edible Crawfish?
isn't there something wrong when big corporations make backroom deals to limit production to raise prices, but somehow people view it differently if it's farmers? Let's get willie, neil young, and john mellencamp out for farm aid XXX.

Do any of you people know what it costs to raise crawfish these days? With the price of fuel so high to pump water into these fields the farmers cannot make it at under 1.00 a pound. People will pay six or seven dollars a pound for a good steak right? Get a clue people!!
1 lb of steak is filling for the normal person, crawfish is about 12-14 dollars a pound peeled. |
A statewide boycott of Chinese crawfish might be a smart idea.
yeah, that way when the farmers here short the market to create high prices we can really get gouged. great idea. I buy live crawfish from here, but not after they want to short the market to gouge. Ralph Nader wouldn't approve of them doing it, so I wont either

You can feed more than one person with a pound of peeled crawfish. If you don't like the prices then don't buy them, buy the ones that are from China. No big deal people. Just remember you get what you pay for.
YEAH YOU GET CRAWFISH RAISED IN SEWAGE DITCHES!! I WOULD NEVER BUY CHINESE CRAWFISH JUST TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS! |
Thank you. At least someone around here has a clue!!! |

It's okay for the buyer of the crawfish to say that the farmers are trying to rip them off, but until you have to make a living being a farmer and trying to raise a family please don't post ignorant comments. The store owners and resturant owners are buying the crawfish from the farmers at a $1 a pound but the cost to the consumer has not gone down. This is what the farmers are upset about. The cost of fuel is still rising and they are just trying to make a living. The store owners and resturant owners are doing well. The consumer should be up in arms right there with the farmers.

This is the second time I try to post this so lets see if they let me post it. The farmer is just trying to make a living and feed his family. The farmer is selling his crawfish to store owners and resturants for $1 a pound, but the store owners and resturants are not lowering their prices. As consumers, we are paying the same price that we were paying when the owners were buying it from the farmers for more money. As consumers we should be rallying along side of the crawfish farmer.

I have had my post kicked off twice. I will just say that I am all for the farmers. Who can blame them when they sell their crawfish for $1 to the store owners and resturants but they, the owners don't lower the prices to the consumer. the farmers are only trying to make a living.

I am not sure if I know you or not CP Lady. Give me a hint.

Lady, get a clue. Do you have any idea what it cost to run a business. Labor, insurance, utilities, workers comp, etc. You are ignorant if you think there is more than just the price of the crawfish in the per pound price we charge to the public. Furthermore, If you think any retail establishment that sells quality crawfish is paying $1.00 lb, you are even more ignorant then you sound. Let me give you a little lesson on how this works. Lets just say that we buy one sack of crawfish and the tag says 35lbs, let me assure you that it only ways about 33 lbs when we get it. Thats a $2.00 or $3.00 dollar loss per sack before we even start. Then we wash and grade the sack. There is another 2 or 3 lbs of grass, turtles and what ever else farmers can put in to boost the weight. Then It would be safe to say that when you grade you will lose some small crawfish. These small crawfish are then sold for about half of what we paid when we purchased them. Lets add a little more to this equation, it takes 5.8 lbs of live crawfish to make 5 lbs of boiled crawfish. They lose weight when you boil them. DO YOU STILL THINK WE ARE PAYING ONLY A $1.OO LB. When you cost average everything we are paying musch more then $1.00 lb. I hope you see why we have to charge $4.00 lb for boiled crawfish. We have to make a living also, because without people like me you would not have anywhere to sell your crawfish. Stop crying and join the rest of us in the real world.

Thank you crawfish retail.!!! Glad to know someone who knows what the hec they are talking about.

Do you think the farmers are paying taxes on all the crawfish they sell? Not!!Some of them hide how much they sell so they dont have to pay tax !!I have heard a couple of the big farmers bragg a few years ago on how much money they made selling crawfish and how they dont claim everything they catch.I will not name any names but one of these guys passed away recently and the other one has bragged about making 400,000 cash in one year.

Mother of 4 in CP make sure you read crawfish retail"s full post. I don't htink he is supporting the crawfish farmer in any way.
Gotcha, I understand that his post was not supporting the farmers, but the retailers. Mixed emotions being we are getting it from both ends.
