High schools in Elgin district to begin random weapons checks

Nice article but it wouldn't have detected Angel, not in a million tries. He used a steak knife. Think about it. The attack didn't occur in class. He could have kept the knife in his locker for weeks without detection. And it wouldn't have helped the situation at NIU either. This security solution is pure Pablum.

It would be interesting to know how the computer software will "randomly" select classrooms for weapons scans. My daughter attended Elgin High and was an honors student throughout. I don't recall any of her classmates creating problems. There were other classes for students with academic and/or behavorial issues where every day was a challenge to the teachers. If the schools come up with a way to prevent violence, it will go far beyond random weapons scans. A sharpened pencil is a weapon in the hands of a student whose head and heart are filled with hatred and rage.
