An East Rockaway sixth-grader was hailed as a hero by his mother Saturday after he jumped from their minivan and lifted a railroad crossing gate that had come down on the car's windshield, letting his mother ...

The wooden gates cannot stop a wet fart. If you're dumb enough to get stuck with a gate across your hood after clearing the first one you are dumber than a stump.

Is this mother stupid? Why wouldn't she just get out of the car and lift the gate? Why would she let her son do it? If that didn't work, why wouldn't you just get out of the car period??? Why do people make things so much harder than they need to be? Using common sense is not a crime.

This mother sounds like a real winner. Hit the gas lady and the gate will give way.
The kid should heave kept the illegal on the tracks.

Well, it looks like we all know from what side of the family the young man got his intelligence and quick thinking.

I live in East Rockaway. Thank God this child had the presence of mind to do something . Unfortuantly his mom did NOT use ocmmon sense and niether did the truck driver. Asthe MTA person said - they should NOT have entered the area of the tracks if the way was not clear on the other side. I see people do this all the time - I am a professional driver and am on the road all the time - it amazes me how little common sense a lot of people have when it comes to this. NEVER EVER attempt to cross the tracks if your way is blocked by another car - you MUST be able to get off the tracks ASAP for exactly the reason this woman got stuck there.

Just wondering if this boys quick thinking was due to the fact that he is the product of a single mom who has no help from the father who may be a dead beat dad and absent from his life. This little man may feel that he is the protector of his mother who doesn't seem very bright. God Bless his courage.

She may need to learn common sense but YOU need to learn to have common decency. Try cleaning up YOUR act.

Shows how much YOU DON'T know. Most minivans are actually quite fuel efficient. So try this - shut the EF up unless you know what you are talking about. If you were commenting on her lack of common sense that would be one thing but mouthing off and being an idiot about it is another.

AMAZING the twists people can put on a story isn't it- is he the product of a dead beat dad and that is why he did what he did to prove himself ???? PLEASE ...people...get a grip on yourselves. Try writing fiction if you are so compelled to come up with these things.

I agree with that you said. This woman is dumber than bricks! Who ever heard of pulling onto railroad traks if there is not enough room ahead to completely clear the tracks? If that wasn't bad enough she pulls into oncoming traffic. Can someone at the DMV please REVOKE her license immediately. Let the kid drive her around instead.

You should change your name to meanspiritdumbass. I did not say she had NO man in life, HE may have no man in his life. I am involved with many children who have no father figure. They grow up way too fast, and feel like they are the head of the household.

This woman should loose her drivers license for being so stupid as to drive over the tracks without the brains to know she couldn't make it. It's stupid people like that on the road that ultimately have accidents that kill innocent people.
