I'm looking for people in the Statesville, NC area to roll with. I don't really have a good place to roll though. I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 3 years and I've wrestled for 6 years. I'm 24 and looking for experienced and beginners to work out and train with.

I am currently learning from a guy from my church. I am 20. We have not trained in like 2months because of thanksgiving. Anyways before we took a break he told me that there were some guys that were going to start training. Anyways, I am going to talk to him next time I see him. He works at Mitchell CC.

The Lowes YMCA in Mooresville will shortly be starting a martial arts program (jujitsu and judo). If you are interested, please let me know and I will advise once we start the program.

I don't know about Instructor Flynn. I would look out for some of the ones that lie about their experience to make themselves sound tougher. Bryant Harrell claims to have won a Pan Am silver medal in 1988, but the Pan Am games were in 1987, then 1991 and he is not on the list as a medal winner at any level in 1987. He also claims to have been "US Navy Special Forces", but based on my experience (6 years active duty Navy, stationed on a base where Seals frequently came for specialty training) nobody in the Navy calls themselves "Special Forces". There are some recruiter posters that use that term, but Navy either uses "Special Warfare" or "Special Operations Forces". I verified with a group that specializes in false claims that he never attended Bud/S. Typically, the only forces that call themselves "Special Forces" are the Army Special Forces or Green Barets.

As a Navy Veteran, who has known Spec War and Spec Ops people, it offends me that he makes such claims. What especially steams me is that he uses deception to further a career of teaching children. My daughter was in one of his "Stranger Danger" classes and was scared to death of him. She was 4 or 5 and it was done through the Church.

Sorry for your bad experience.

It's always necessary to check out any school before joining (whether it be martial arts or educational). I have never made any claims as to my qualifications on this forum. I respectfully request that you do not put me into the same category.

I did just finish doing a few classes during the Greatest Training Camp On Earth at Belmont Abbey College. Unfortunately I will not be teaching jujitsu at the Mooresville YMCA. I currently teach the women’s self defense class there and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I will be doing a campus safety class at the end of July at the Mooresville YMCA.

Currently I am in negotiations with KPAC in Statesville (exit 45 off of Rt 77) and hope to start instructing in September. I currently still teach at the Lake Norman YMCA martial arts program.

For those that are having difficulties finding the right school, please keep looking, there are many fine instructors in the area.

For some reason my response did not post the first time. If it shows up I am sorry to repeat myself.

I served 6 years active duty in the military working with Navy and Coast Guard Special Operations forces. Although we did not have any Special Warfare personel in our unit, I met quite a few off-duty. I later served an additional 3 years as a reservist.

Here's why I have an issue with you. A good friend of mine before he died, Floyd Thompson, was a long held POW and a member of the Special Forces (Army Green Beret). To see someone add "Special Forces" to their resume without earning it bothers me and is what got me started looking at your claims. The fact that you are not even using the terminology consistant with your claims made it even more irritating.

I was unaware that my daughter was attending your "training" until after it was over. Her mother didn't tell me about it until I asked her if she had ever heard of you. It was part of a church group thing, as I said and I believe it was held at the church. When I encountered you at the mall, my daughter was calmly and quietly drinking a slushy, if I remember correctly. Whether she actually cried or just shied away from you during the class, I don't know. I did not do much other than comment on your posters because I did not want to initate a conflict in front of my daughter.

If any of my information is incorrect, then I would be happy to appologize. I attempted to verify it. So far, I have no reason to believe the information I have posted is wrong.

You claimed on your website to have been a member of Navy "Special Forces". When we encountered at the mall you equated that to Navy Antiterrorism. The Navy's premier group for Antiterrorism is the Navy Special Warfare Development Group, formerly Seal Team 6. All members of this group have graduated from BUD/S and earned the right to wear the pin. I have only met a handful from this group, but they definitely call themselves Spec War (Special Warfare), not Special Forces. If you were part of this group, what was your BUD/S class number?

You claimed to have one the Silver in the 1988 Pan Am games. The Pan Am games were held in 1987 and 1991. Wikipedia lists the medal winners for Judo for 1987. While not definitive, I can find the true list if it is wrong. What year, location and weight class did you win?

Navy MWR, who sponsor's the "All Navy" teams, claims that in the times of service you listed they did not have any information on an "All Navy" Judo team at that time. I actually didn't post anything about this in this forum, but since you brought it up I will address it.

I don't know anything about your claims of starting a Judo team aboard ship and have not disputed this.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your son.

I have not made any comments about race, and it was definitely not a consideration. I am fiercely loyal to the Navy and my country and i don't like to see anyone do wrong by it. You are welcome to send my notes to anyone. If they can shed some light on your claims, more power to them. I applaud their service.

I am not interested in trying out your abilities. I have not worked out in a considerable time and probably would not fair well against anyone who trains regularly. You may very well be a talented Martial Artist. I have not watched you train and don't know. My issues where with some of your claims of experience, not whether you knew any martial arts.

Instructor Flynn,

I did not mean to group you in with anyone. I did a search on Statesville and Judo, to see if Bryant Harrell was still making the same claims about his military service and found this site. I remembered his claims about the Pan Am Silver Medal in Judo and the All Navy Judo team. I was trying to warn people looking for Judo training to research.

There are several good Martial Arts schools in Statesville. Karate & Sports Fitness has a good program that covers multiple styles from Judo techniques to pure boxing. I have heard good things about Champion Muay Thai.

I have had the chance to study numerous styles earning a number of lower belts in different styles. I enjoyed my time studying Aikido, as well as Kuk Sool Wan, Shito Ryu, Tae Qwan Do, Gujo Ryu and Okinawan Kempo.

Did this ever pan out? KPAC is just up the street from me and would be an ideal Jiu-jitsu facility.

My apologies for the delay with KPAC. We are finalizing the contract and insurance issues and with a bit of luck will be offering both Judo and Jujitsu in the next few months.

Just got to take a minute and put in my 2 cents on Sensei Harrell. I have 2 children who have trained with Sensei and I can't say enough good about him. He expects a certain behavior from the kids and they respond and really try. My kids love him to death. My daughter got scared when he came out in the stranger danger class with the pads on...but thats pretty well normal I think. And truth be told, if someone tries to abduct they are going to be scared, I'd rather they know what to do, scared or not. I had to quit training for a while due to health issues but am starting back now. I am going back with Sensei Harrelll and his team because I feel like his skills are awesome and that he supports and ecourages and really cares about his students...kids and adults.

I believe that if a man is making his living by keeping kids safe and teaching them how to protect themselves; Than you have no wright to attack him in such a way as to slaaughter his good reputation by spewing lies about him. Sensei Harrell is a great man and a great teacher, he even served out country. You should leave him alone or grow a spine and meet with him face to face.
