Driving from Woodstock west on Rt 4 this Friday night with a pickup truck on my tail all the way into Bridgewater - in the dark and on unfamiliar road - I had the last straw of being pulled over for speeding right after the pickup truck pulled off the road as we entered Bridgewater. Let's see, I was under the speed limit the whole way, and was so rattled by the pick up truck I didn't see the 25 mph sign. My bad - I was going the posted speed up to the sign. So no excuses on my part but I couldn't help but notice that the non-Vermont plate person (me) was the one singled out. The cop was very obviously interested in nothing but writing a ticket. Pulls over and simply asks for my license and registration. Never once says why he pulled me over till he came back with the ticket at which time he made a point of emphasising that, should I contest the ticket in court, I had a good chance of having to pay a $1000+ fine. The message was clear that I ought not to contest the ticket. The parting shot from the cop - "enjoy my weekend in Vermont". Well, envisioning a $1000 hit to my bank account I spent no money in Vermont. I was glad to read this article when I got home and read about speed traps.
