A solar-powered ripoff

Full story: Bennington Banner

One of the most intense concerns of theenviro-laden majority party in recent Legislature has been to find some invisible way of subsidizing its favorite corporate welfare recipient, "renewable energy." The 2005 Legislature created a Clean Energy Development Fund to make grants and loans to qualified wind, solar, biomass, methane, small hydro and ...

The owner of the installations can be anybody, not some evil corporation ... and it is expected that Utility companies will be smart and own the installations themselves so they'll be paying themselves the $0.30/kWh, in which case that isn't too bad of a deal - it will pay for itself over it's life so it just a matter of funding and with the loan guarantees of the 2009 ARRA that shouldn't be a problem either.

There are a number of Utility companies that are training their own people so they can do it just this way. Not only are they doing solar fields, but they are leasing out their panels. Some even working with cities to facilitate that process so solar power can be paid for through property taxes, with no electric bill to worry about.

Why is SPEED designed this way? There are a number of reasons ... but "corporate welfare" has nothing to do with it ... all are welcome to make this investment and sell the power back to the Utilities at this rate ... even if you don't have much $ you can form an investment club and get involed as an investor, or you can do a PPA arrangement allowing you to get solar on your house with no money down (3rd party ownership).

All facilitated by SPEED, and if utility companies are smart about it it should not affect utility rates by much at all. Therein lies the problem ... will utility companies be smart about it? Hopefully, for their sake, they will. Ultimately though, over 25 years the net cost to the public will be comparable to getting power through conventional means.

ps - 25 yrs with practically no maintenance costs is actually a reasonable expectation for solar PV - one of the reasons it's so great.

solar not great at all.
at takes 10 12 volt 100 watt panels to run one 120volt 100 watt appliance.
