Silly to cite "privacy" regarding the flu. If a child gets lice or strep or chicken pox, a note is sent home to all the families in that class to let us know a child had one of those issues. What's the difference between that and the flu? By sending home such a generic note, they're fanning the panic rather than calming parents down.

I'm sure the district is trying their best to keep panic down by not stating which grade. Instead of seeing the whole school attendance drop. HAHAHA thats totally what they aren't doing. I kept my kids home since that note. My kids don't need to bring that home where i already have a sick mother. I wanna know what steps they take to sanatize the rooms. What protects the spread is there cleaning of the rooms every night thourghly. Did they hire any extra people to help the custodians? Whats more important a safe, clean, disinfected school or keeping the school out of the red? They already save money every chance they get.

I heard rumors that there were 3 confirmed cases of the H1N1 at Parkview school!!! The maintanance people have been closing the bathrooms 1 at a time for a special cleaning. I sure hope I dont hear about any more cases. I also heard it takes 2 weeks to get the results of the H1N1 TEST.

1 That is what I heard on the news. Sorry, I should have checked From the CDC web site http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm Contamination & Cleaning How long can influenza virus remain viable on objects (such as books and doorknobs)? Studies have shown that influenza virus can survive on environmental surfaces and can infect a person for 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on the surface. What kills influenza virus? Influenza virus is destroyed by heat (167-212°F [75-100°C]). In addition, several chemical germicides, including chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, detergents (soap), iodophors (iodine-based antiseptics), and alcohols are effective against human influenza viruses if used in proper concentration for a sufficient length of time. |

I am sure the schools are doing their best to keep the school healthy and germ free. I have trust in the custodial staff at my kids schools. I saw them cleaning today during parent teacher meetings. I know that there job only get worse as the school years goes on keeping the school clean and soon keeping it clear and salted in snowy weather. It worked out so well having the entrance shovled at columbia for my sons basketball games.

papaadoc - don't feel bad, I think we saw/read the same news article - I also thought it could only survive outside the body for 3 hours under "ideal conditions". Obviously, wherever we saw/read that, it was incorrect - because the CDC clearly states otherwise.
One thing that is common in all the newscasts I've seen - they remind us that washing hands is the best way to avoid it. It's not guaranteed, but washing before eating certainly helps. |

Now some of the teachers at the schools are starting to get sick!! Im worried about my kids getting the virus, 2 of my kids friends have gotten the flu.

No matter how much and how well the staff clean the school it will not stop the spread of the virus..The schools are doing the best they can..so do not bad mouth the school. The children are touching each other and the same things all the time. The only way to prevent germs is to put your child in a bubble. Everyone is going to get sick at some point. I know everyone is so worried about the H1N1 but the best thing you can do is talk to your child and tell them to keep washing their hands and to try not to touch their face. Also, crete monee high school was offering free H1N1 Vaccines. Take your child their.

1 Just wanted to say - what a spectacular show. Kudos to the Directors (Mrs. Kaminksi & Ms. Cate). At any given time there had to be at least a dozen kids on stage (probably more) doing all sorts of activities - not just standing. They were jumping rope, pretending to play video games, board games. Making paper airplanes, etc etc. And dancing to 6 or 8 dance routines (can't remember). With that many kids on a stage, you'd wonder how many times they bumped into each other? How about ZERO. YEP ZERO. This is a testament to the excellent direction by the Directors and to the kids themselves who obviously practiced very often and very hard. And it showed - a flawless performance across the board. Each actor/actress had "parts" even when they weren't up front, they were all required to be doing something in the background (like in professional stage plays)- and they all did it. The accompanying chorus was awesome too - with their singing and choreography. GREAT JOB TO THE STUDENTS & THE DIRECTORS!! I am SO thankful that 194 has not dropped the Arts like so many other districts have!!! Th |
