Bridgeport, Gathering of the Vibes a perfect match

Full story: Connecticut Post

The Gathering of the Vibes has enjoyed two glorious years at Bridgeport's Seaside Park since its return to the site, but it wasn't that long ago that there was the distinct possibility of the company that organizes the festival going out of business.

I would like to take a moment to commend the City of Bridgeport and co contributors for the continuous improvement and expansion of the annual Gathering of the Vibes music festival, which is scheduled to take place this week at Seaside Park. I think that the community must also be aware of the opportunity for improvement regarding the extremely serious drug and drinking problem that takes place at this event every year; and in the surrounding area on a daily basis
Huge amounts of heroin, cocaine, LSD, and ecstasy are there every year along with underage drinking and marijuana. While the radio announcements by Mayor Finch may be correct in stating that there have been no arrests at this event, those comments may be extremely misleading and perhaps not this safest policy this year.
The main event is primarily patrolled by private security (bikers I understand) that are hired by the event coordinators to keep peace. They do not monitor drug activity; the camping and beach areas, where most of the drug activity is taking place has not been monitored to any significant degree at all in the past.
Parents may also be concerned about what will happen as kids leave and then return to the park, and may also want to be informed about the extremely harsh new state drug laws and what it means to be an accessory, conspirator, abettor, etc.
Parents have an obligation to communicate with the Mayor of Bridgeport, and as well as local, state and federal drug enforcement authorities to better understand what new plans are in place. They can also ask how they as parents might help keep the children safe at this historic event. These safeguards are especially important in view of recent links between drug activity and satanic cults in the area.

The concert doesn't need rif raf to do well. In fact, just the opposite would do the city, the event and their sponsors much better overall.

Perhaps the authorities will do their best to get as many drug dealers off the streets of CT this week as possible; especially within 30 miles of the event. With 30,000 or more expected to attend, they would also have a great opportunity to photograph and record drug activity at the event and surrounding areas for 'future reference.' Parents as tax payers could push the point.

Also, if kids and others knew that even first offenders could get up to 7 yrs in jail and a 50,000 fine for narcotics possession alone, they might find a new hobby. Ocmmunicating this info would be easy for the city and event coordinators to accomplish.

Another nightmare from hell. Can't park in front of your home, lots of garbage, drug dealers, and Seaside Park held hostage.

Have it at Beardsley Park and keep it to one day.

Most people in the city do not want this. Too much going on in the hood already.

What a great opportunity for a really novel win win stimulus package ! Have a reward system in place (for the community year round as well as event attendees) to pay those who help the authorities with catching these folks. With the huge fines,(I think up to $250,000 for three timers re drug possession and 4,000,000 for dealers in some cases,) could lead to hugh financial benefits for the community and state alike, while motivating community members to help in cleaning up the city & makin the dealers think twice to boot.

The City of Bridgeport is giving No Arrest pass concerning violation of the State of Connecticut Drug Laws. Is this what we need in a City Park.

Buddy, the last thing parents need to worry about is arrests being made at the vibes. Believe me there will be no police inside the area with the exception of a few cops on quads. Bpt. police are not even allowed to patrol inside the gates so snort, smoke, shove, eat all you want!!!

These comments are hysterical, Recently while driving with my family through Bpt. I watched a gang of kids beat up another kid(called 911}, and watched the prostitutes and drug dealers openly displaying their trade. So delapilated houses with garbage all over. Great BPT pride. I am going to the Vibes with my family and have gone in the past. I have found it safer there then around the city of Bpt on a normal day. I go for the music and the strong sense of community there. Sorry for all of you who want your hip hop or rap but that brings even more trouble than CSN or the other music artists that will be at the vibes. Look even the Puerto Rican Day Parade was marred with violence and it wasn't the first time. So all of you should relax and allow the music to go on. Stop condeming good people for a selected few bad eggs. Or should I write off all of BPT for a select few that have no pride in their homes, neighborhoods, and partake in a trade dangerous to the community? Get a grip people, just because it not your type of music don't condemn the whole thing. I do not do drugs and do not drink. For me and my family, it is about the music.

For those of you who probably never even went to the Vibes, maybe you should quit the bashing. What some of you are saying is not the facts. Do some people smoke pot or drink, yes, but not the majority of those that attend. I went last year and will go again this year, I had a great time. There was no mess anywhere in the surrounding streets and people were all happy & behaving well. No shooting, stabbing or fights. Its sad the way people bash Bridgeport and this event, you don't know what goes on there unless you attend. So don't knock it til you try it.

I really wish that people would open their closed minds. This scene is about family, music and loving your neighbors. Drugs are a part of this scene, they have been since the 60's and they will continue to be.

If you don't want your children around drugs, don't let them attend or educate them so they can make the right decisions for themselves.

It's not right to wish for other people to be jailed, and no they are not all rich kids whose parents will bail them out. Being arrested ruins your entire life. That is some serious bad karma you are putting out there if you really wish such an awful thing upon another person. What if every time you went over the speed limit someone wished you would crash or get a ticket because you were 'breaking the law' or you 'might hurt someone'.

Drugs are not inherently dangerous, its uneducated people who don't know their bodies limits. Do you blame the gun, or the person holding it?

Thank you for your responses pro and con and for your multiple viewpoints. Wanna share an undisbutable fact for all to think about, before I move to another topic.

During the hot weather, body fluids tend to decrease sometimes to the point of dehydration. When this happens, the blood fluid volume will decrease as well, and the substance in question can be much more concentrated. The effect is magnified when alcohol is ingested, especially in teens. The consequences can be serious in some cases.

In the case of cocaine, especially if smoked or injected, the blood pressure can rise to extreme levels within the heart and brain in seconds, potentially causing a burst blood vessel and possible leading to immediate death.

Opiods, like heroin, can stop the breathing centers in the brain just as fast. If the amounts of these substances are concentrated due to hot weather, the effect can also be lethal rather quickly, especially in young people who may be small. Parts of their system are also not as developed to handle such stresses.

There are also processes within the body that tend to 'fight' off negative effects if done in similar surroundings; as a cue of some sort. This is why heroin addicts will tend to OD more often when doing things is new surroundings. They don't have the cues present to get their body to fight the junk - a good name.

Even the thc in pot can cause unexpected and serious problems in the heat in unfamiliar surroundings.

So, if these comments keep just one kid at risk from a real serious problem in a tent, bathroom, van,
S U V... or out of a crackhouse, dealer vehicle or unsafe back room in the area somewhere, ect .....or prevent bad things from being passed through the fences at night this year, then perhaps they have done some good.

With freedom cones responsibility.

Hope you all enjoy the event !

Seems to me that you have a great knowledge in the drugs department may be for being an addicted or for being around the scum of society. either way drugs brings destruction to the brain cells and eventually attack the nervous system. So I hope we can save some youngsters with this information from ever fall into the trap of using drugs, because once your in you leave dead...!

just so that you all know-

a bridgeport resident can go all weekend (no camping) for $75.00

a regular all weekend, including camping is $200.00
a regular one day pass is $75.00
--
Dregs of society usually cannot come up with this kind of money, and so to assume that everyone there is a drunk or a druggie is ridiculous.

Educate yourself, this is a wonderful event, that benefits all of Bridgeport.

Have a Great Time Vibers!!!!

I am only prehaps referring to a very small percentage that may be up to no good and putting others at risk, while the vast majoprity are well intended folk. Is it 97 precent ??? who knows.

But remember, even at 3 percent of 30,000 people, that would equate to 900 potential trouble sources over a few acres & it takes only only one person (dealer or anybody else) to give a susceptable something to a unsuspecting child (too niave to make the right decisions)that could potentially hurt them real bad or worse & ruin lives.

Depends on what drugs you're doing. Marijuana does not destroy brain cells, it merely causes fatigue to them. They are never destroyed and the fatigue is temporary.

Who told you that crock of shit? Being arrested doesn't me anything other than you been arrested. Going to prison doesn't ruin your life either. Now having felony convictions will put a damper in your path in life but definitely doesn't ruin it.
