Plans announced for a mosque in Norwalk

Shame on the residents of Stone Ridge for refusing to speak to the organizers of the Norwalk mosque. Instead of trying to discuss there problem neighbor to neighbor they lawyered up. Next winter when the snow in unploughed residents can blame their condo association for all the money they've spent unnecessarily.

I consider those people opposed to the mosque to be the same type of folks who opposed integration of neighborhoods in the 60s and 70s. Ignorance and prejudice will never win. I support the Muslims in building their mosque and the neighbors should just try and figure out how they're going to adjust themselves to the new reality.

The purpose of a mosque is not for worship--that is Western thinking. A mosque is built to show power and dominance. Stop them.

How would like a church, mosque, or synagogue with an underground parking garage built next door to your home in Norwalk and ruin in your property values?

First get the name of the condominium association correct--Stonegate Condominium Association. Stonegate hired a lawyer to ensure that the 32 unit owners who pay tax to the City of Norwalk and are voters and residents of the City of Norwalk have their property rights protected too. For the record, the Al Madany Islamic Center purchased the property on May 15, 2008 and never has done any "outreach" to the neighboring property owners until they were tipped off by someone that their neighbors got hold of their plans which were published on the web. If Al-Madany truly cared about its neighbors then it should have spoken with us well before engaging an architect to draw the plans for mosque with a capacity of 400; 80 parking spaces; and an underground parking garage on a 1.5 acre site.

The little red house that this property sits on was on the market for several years before it sold.
No one wanted this home, not even a builder b/c you can't knock it down (per historical society). I've never seen the backyard, but my guess is that they would build in back of this house?

It's very obvious, you do see several cars in the driveway with the shades drawn and when I read in the real estate transactions who purchased the home, I knew right away that they were using this house for prayer service. This red house is a 1 person home. You have to see it to believe it. It looks like something out of a fairy tale.

In response to "Let There be a Mosque", you made a very good point, look how well the "integration of minorities into neighborhoods" has worked out ...they have turned neighborhoods into slums, with rampant violence and crime... great example, thanks for that.

I feel sorry for the people who are going to be living next door to this mosque. Good luck trying to get some sleep especially anyone working night shifts. These people pray and wail all day long!

I cannot believe that zoning would allow such a building to be erected in that neighborhood. I live within a mile of the proposed site and am totally against it. That area is designed as residential (don't know the exact zone), but to build such a large mosque (with a dome and spire, no less) would not be in conformance with the surrounding area. Perhaps the center should consider the Reed/Putnam area or someplace more "commercial" and leave Fillow Street to its residents.

The residents have legitimate concerns. This is a residential area and a mosque is not residential. A zone change would have to be granted to allow it to be built. Instead of purchasing residential property, they should have purchased property that is already zoned for their intended use. And how do they think 80 parking spaces is sufficient for a capacity of 400? They are asking for special exemptions. A mosque would adversely affect the residents living there and the market value of the residential properties.

The area is zoned AAA and allows for houses of worship to be built. There are dozens of churches in residential areas in Norwalk. Having a mosque in a residential area should cause no more concern. I fully understand that there are concerns about traffic. There is a traffic study being done which will provide an objective basis for determining what needs to be done to make sure there are no traffic problems.

We should change Norwalk's law to support Sharia rights and privileges so all may enjoy the blessings of the most peaceful religion.

the idea of "throwing muslims out" gets us into tricky territory, this is where we start building internment camps and other such nasty things. this idea is too extreme and is exactly the sort of thing that pushes people back towards the "multiculturalism camp".

shutting our borders to further immigration from islamic countries would be more then sufficient to stem the flow of terrorist and sends a very clear, non-violent, signal; "we will not put up with your crap."

Norwalk does show its ugly side,woman and child beat at bus station,woman beat in front of police station two nights ago,rapists,diddler cops,a mayor who has sold the city to developers,a city filled with crime and now this I don't know how people live with themselves knowing Norwalk may be home to a mosque.

Where is teh ehad of the council Rev Bolden she needs to weigh in on this she has power she has insight she has her own god to steer her.Or is she running for mayor knowing the wrong move could ruin her chances of running.

What about the mayor has anyone told him you can ticket illegal cars once its built,the permits and construction costs alone,,oh wait this is a tax free zone correct? Right up there with the vets of course screw the mosque we already have the shooters,stabbers bomb makers and hijackers in South Norwalk that would be like having two hotels next to each other.

During this time that our city needs as much tax revue as it can get, will this property be taxed or will it be exempt because of its status? If it is exempt, how much tax revue will the city lose? Since they will be keeping the little house, will they be splitting up the property into two parcels? And, during these two times a year when 400 will attend, were will the overflow park? Take a look at the Greek Church on West Rock Road and use this as an example of how this will hurt the area as well as property values.

property values? have you not read the latest news Norwalk is one of the most undesirable places to live in the country.Obvious something has transpired in Norwalk to make it such a hole.Blame it on the taxpayers they love their leadership.

Or just maybe the new owners are understnding when they bought into Norwalk the real estate brokers were Norwalks leadership or connected closely.

What will zoning do now? They have been responsible for making developers build second floors to buildings they now can't rent even the first floors.Zoning has looked the other way to save 5 jobs yet the city has lost 1200 since then.Zoning has not alloted any gas stations in the city in all of its new developments a tax that comes back to the city.So who cares about value I hope you all lose the shirt of the backs of your whole family we have in South Norwalk years ago.

I don't think it would ruin my property values at all. There are churches in many residential communities without any dimunition whatsoever.
