Lean times challenge Twin Cities private schools

Full story: TwinCities.com

St. Mary Elementary has survived for 130 years. But the recession was too much for the tiny Catholic school in southern Dakota County to endure.

Not to worry. The Obamessiah has a multi-trillion dollar public school bailout plan in the works. Just hold tight. They're waiting for the new plastic to arrive. ... ... I suppose in the meantime we could just try teaching the children how to read, write, and do arithmetic, and hold off on the Al Gore Eco-Terror tutorials, and the American Racism seminars, etc. etc.

Bologna, this is just proof to what Wallstreet did to everyone. Prices sky rocketed all over the place. We all know it. Why in the darn sam did the gas get so high last year? Because, investors knew that the housing market was crashing, businesses no longer could run, on an on and on it goes. I know lets open a private public charter school and bilk MN out of millions of dollars.

Many private schools are hurting because they had their endowments invested in markets that went south, or worse, Bernie Madoff.

I don't send my children to private schools simply because I cannot afford it however, what do these schools expect with what they charge for tuition as it is? Just take a look at the schools like Blake, Breck, and Mounds Park Academy...just to send an elementary school-aged child there is 18,000/year. Once they reach Jr. high it jumps again, just as it does once they reach high school....oh' not to mention paying the public school taxes as well.

The St. Andrew's closing could have been prevented by the Church, the local ELCA Synod or quite frankly, the ELCA of the USA. This was a beautiful school that taught children all of the required subjects PLUS God's teachings - to be kind and benevolent to all, to forgive and look for the good in others, to actively seek ways to improve the world. Without private, tuition paid options - the public school system would explode under the weight of the additional students. This church should be embarrassed and ashamed they did not believe a achool is part of their mission.

I'm glad that many private schools are being bailed out. I attended a private university for my Bachelors and it was nice having a little more strict rules. In order to be at my school, you had to follow certain rules like wear modest clothing, don't drink alcohol/do drugs/smoke, and more. It may seem like a lot of rules but I was glad that as a group, we held such high standards. I liked the environment I was in and we found creative ways to have fun. This is a good experience for everyone who is looking for this type of sanctuary. http://www.pinewood.edu

Okay, these schools are pricey. However, their students get a first-rate education, something the shitty government-issue public schools dont' provide--at ANY price.

Mayor-for-Life R(aise) T(axes) Rybank understands this as well as anyone. He sent his kids to Breck, rather than risk them in the MPS.

Another reason Mpls schools are seeing enrollment spikes is that a number of suburban schools are terminating Open Enrollment.

They must be finding state aid cuts make Open Enrollment a losing proposition.

At SOME schools, part of the reason tuition is high is because someone has to pay for all of the atheletes that get "hardship" discounts.

So, are you saying this about ALL public schools? If so, that would be pretty clueless.

People make the decision to send their children to a private schools for a variety of reasons, the biggest reason I heard, was "security/enviornment "
Parents want those entrusted with their most treasured gifts, have the enviornment to allow those children to exploit their talents to the fullest. Pricey! Yep! If you were to pay the actual cost of your district's school, instead of sharing it with your fellow citizens you would be amazed of what the actual costs are. Private School students are eligible for certain state aid because of lunch and bus issues. Like the Public Schools, the largest expense for Pvt. Schools is salaries. The difference is the Government, State and Federal, help pay for the Public School.
Rybek, President Obama and many more public officials send their children to Private Schools and yet no one, NO ONE, will take on the Public School Educators and find away to make improvements. WHY??? Because leaders like Education Minnesota has a litany of excuses they pull like a gun everytime anyone brings up anything negative about the Public School System.
Private Schools generally have a better track record in terms of graduation rates, and students going on to college.

I was forced to remove my son from the neighborhood school because the kids from the Hood kept telling him they were going to Kill him and the school would do nothing about it. This was in Second grade. He now is getting a first rate education in a private school. Thank you Public School system.

It tells me a lot about the St Paul school system. However, it doesn't tell me anything about the majority of public school districts that provide a very good education environment.

Your right, so take a look at the graduation rates of Minorities from the Public School system state wide. I don't have specifics, but I believe the gap between whites and minorities continues to be significant. This is practically the same gap that exsisted 40 years ago. Excuse after excuse is offered, but the only cure they offer is, "more money" After all these years, quite frankly it is very sad.

I just think it would be a wise move - if possible - for adults to go unannounced to visit MSP classrooms. The problem is not the teachers, believe me.
