Judged: 7 6 3 I work for a large private company in the Twin Cities area. In 2003, my wife was killed when she was hit by a drunk driver as she jogged along a road whiel we vacationed on the east coast. I notified my company as I would not be back to work as scheduled. My company flew some co-workers, my wife's family and some of her friends out east to accompany my wife back to Minnesota. I never saw a bill. It was an immense kindness and I am eternally grateful to my company for doing this. I remain a grateful and dedicated employee to the company. As a happy employee, I know I contribute more time and effort to making my company strong. You--almost undoubtedly--helped pay for this as well as you likely use this company on an almost daily basis. Companies that do kindnesses for their employees who are grieving foster better employees, even more dedicated to their jobs. In the end, it makes good business sense. I don't recall anyone telling my company that taking care of their employees was a bad business decision. Given the relative importance of police officers in my life, I am glad that the police leaders who authorized this fine young woman's colleagues to escort her had the foresight to treat their employees well. I am confident that those employees will be even more dedicated to their important jobs. Thank you, police leaders for having the courage to do right by your employees. |
