Do you feel if we are going to give people Foodstamps--Public Aid and or S.S.I. that they should have to pass a monthy drug test. If they fail they get no free money or free food.

Do you get a monthly drug test at your job? If their is no reason to suspect drug usage why add another burden to the situation. Most people on public aid barely have time to sleep or even breathe because of all the regulations already imposed on them. Do you think you are better because you use you employers money to make a living or is the business owner better because he's aquiring money from the public for his goods which they probably don't need. Or is the land lord who charges 10 times what most people can afford to earn a profit not partly responsible for the need to get public aid to survive? Or the employer who refuses to pay people what they can live off of to keep his profits and instead raises the prices on his iteems to make up for his costs? Who are you to accuse someone of doing drugs and try to hassle them monthly simply because they live in a society like this. Public aid is the least we can all contribute to for all of our sakes. none of us are immune to potential loss and poverty. Have we all forgotten the great depression?!

FYI people on public aid have to work or go to school a minimum of 32 hours per week. So really it's not free money.

JAsmine...WHERE do you get your information? In the stat of Mo and Il, they do NOT have to work 32 hours a week to enlist the help of the state! Furthermore, I believe ABLE bodied people SHOULD be tested, or at the VERY least restricted to what they can receive. I've seen people who are completely able to work, hanging out with friends, walking the streets daily. Put that energy to good use and get a job like the rest of us! I'm sorry, but it infuriates me to see those who are capable of working being lazy and sucking off the system! Now, please don't get me wrong, there are single parents and couples who do need help occationaly. Along with disabled. However, when you can be up all day playing video games and walking the streets. GET A JOB! Take care of yourself. Its just not fair to the rest of us who live a higher standard of life.

I get this information straight f4rom the welfare department because I had to get on it recently aafter a domestic violence issue. You on the other hand seem to be judging things by appearances without getting the actual facts.

I don't have to take a drug test because I don't work for the government. I know plenty of people who work in the public sector who are tested regularly. If the people getting public aid aren't on drugs, why should they care? If my employer wanted me to take a drug test I wouldn't have a problem with it. My husband is tested regularly because he has a company vehicle and their insurance requires it.

I also know a couple who take public aid, are both able-bodied and capable of work, he sits in the tavern all day & night while she works just enough so that they don't lose their "free" money. Makes me a little pessimistic about the system when I see this going on for over a decade with no end in sight. That said, I don't think there's a problem with giving people IN TRUE NEED aid. The government does not enforce the rules, which ruins it for everyone.

This is just stupid! Does drug tests show alcohol, tobacco and caffeine? They should if you are going to do it-tobacco is the MOST deadly drug of all!

Bull! There are public aid recipients in my neighborhood -- The women are on state aid and have able-bodied male live-ins who do absolutely nothing but feed off the system. The women work approx. 12 hours a week at best -- hardly comparable to what they get in return. In addition, they leave practically every light in the house on all night long. Run water as if its free. Have the windows open while the air conditioner is on or have the air conditioner running when its say 60 degrees outside. Also in the winter, it is not uncommon to see doors and windows open for hours on end. Oh, and let's not forget the endless carryout food, multiple cell phones in addition to the subsidized home phone and although they cannot feed themselves, they all have multiple pets that must be cared for. Also, it seems these people seem to be able to afford an endless supply of cigarettes.
At least Grundy County Illinois needs a severe crackdown on public aid recipients. I'm tired of supporting this white trash.

I do think that the State of Illinois should start cracking down on the people that are on Public Aid. But more than just giving out drug tests. I am a single parent of one, and I am on Public Aid. Its not that I want to be it is a case that I have to be. I do work 40 hours a week at some crappy job no I don't like it, but I do what I have to. But I do know many of people who are also on the system and who use it like a paycheck. And I also know some people who are on the system and do and sell drugs. But the differance between me and them is. I am a single mother that gets no child support of any kind and I work 40 hours a week, and I get $44.00 per month in food stamps, and they are people whom either dont work or very few hours and some sell drugs and get well above $300.00 per month food stamps. Some lay around with every man that says hello to them, making babies just to keep them on the system, while I learned that if I can hardly afford 1 child why would I try to have another. So not only should the State of Illinois start giving out drug tests they should also have a limit of people/children that they will take care of. As for the State having regulations of you have to work so many hours if it is true then I know that it does not apply to all. The State also needs a better system for the child support, and enforce the Deadbeat Parents to pay, and not just skip out on their kids. I have been going to court every 90 days for 3 years, and it is always he does not show, so nothing. I am not white trash! Although I do see how many people think of people on Public Aid as that, but please unless you personally know them, do not judge others that are on Public Aid. Because you do not know their story.

I still can't believe that your sticking by your 'must work 32 hours a week to get state aid help'. You've been grossly mis-informed!!! If people worked 32 hours a week in order to get help, the welfare system would not be in the shape it is now. Cause we wouldn't have so many people living off the system.

And you've not gotten my point at all. I'm not judging people. I said there are people who need it on it. However, there are waaaaaaay too many people on it that shouldn't be! Or that lie to receive it. Its an embaressment to our country. To see a grown man who fought in Vietnam on our streets who has to dig through the dumpster for his next meal....and then to see a woman get out of her nice SUV with a suit on and follow her into the store and then happen to get behind her in line to see her paying with food stamps. Something about that is not right! If you find that judgemental, I find it stating facts! Dump the SUV payment, quit paying for cable, and a huge cell phone bill. Pay for your own food! Just my opinion!

I don't know about where you all live but in eastern ky, everyone is on public assistance and most of them drive new cars and have 4 wheelers and other expensive toys. Most sell drugs to supplement the 'public assistance' income and I agree that drug testing should be required for people who are on public assistance. Also they should have to have home visits to insure that they are indeed 'needy' some people who looks poor on paper are in fact, better off than more HARD working people!

Wow.

First off, all the people that have been born with a silver spoon in there mouth should not have an opinion on anyone who is involved with public aid. You don't know what it's like to be broke, not have a dime on you, and praying for the 1st of the month to come around so you can have 100 bucks to feed yourself and your children. You don't know how it feels to have a 700 rent payment coming up which is 3/4 of your check then to remember your daughter needs another refill on her prescription medications that cost 200 dollars. I am a RN who works 20 hours a week so I can be home with my twin girls who need 24 hour medical attention. That is why i am "poverty whore" It's insulting to read this. People go to the government for help because THEY WANT TO TAKE CARE OF THERE FAMILY!! Yes there is people that abuse the help, and those people are truly sad because they take away from the ones who truly need it. Everyone of you are disgusting, go find something else to bitch about. Sorry your life is boring so you have to down the ones less fortunate to entertain your idiotic mentality. Grow up

People who have children have it made in this country. The government passes out food stamps to feed the hungry, give out housing assistance {HUD} to put a roof over their heads, and give them all a medical card to take care of all their medical. Why would anybody want it any other way? Plus they move in their lovers, they either work or live off the system. What more do they want, they've got it all. Now, the working men and women have it the worse. What qualifies a person to get a medical card? Having a bunch of kids....so people go get laid and have a bunch of kids..... If you can't get off your butts and go find a job, simple as that and who made those rules? Sigh

Everybody in healthcare working in Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Agencies should be made to take a drug test to be able to work in that field. The States should make this mandatory for the safety of all.

I am also an RN. I see people come into the hospital with their nails done, their hair done, their cell phones, tons of tattoos. Do you realize how expensive all that is? Then they're on medicaid, unemployed, on WIC and food stamps....and oh, yeah...test positive for drugs. All on our taxpaying dime. And they're having more children when they can't support the ones they already have.
As for someone's earlier comment about nicotine, yes, there is a blood test that can be done to determine nicotine in the blood stream. Life insurance companies use it all the time.
I am all for drug testing people before they get any assistance. Why should tax payers have to pay for the assistance when they can obviously afford drugs?
