Will it pay for itself like the roundabout was going to be done before school? Will it also pay for the new employees that will have to maintain the system?
Doubtful on both counts. |
why yes, oh dumbass - it will !! that's what PAY FOR ITSELF means....
Why should anyone believe that it will pay for itself? If someone said it's going to tickle your nuts does that mean its true? |
Go to a meeting find out the facts
why SHOULDN'T anyone believe that it will pay for itself ?? do you honestly believe that each and every company who offers Fiber-To-The-Home is doing it and STILL LOSING MONEY ? highland isn't the FIRST community to do this, you know....
and kindly keep your fetishes off the forum.... |
That's not true. Taxpayers have already spent over $100,000. |
You know, I find it vastly humorous how Americans believe that the only monies available to government entities are tax dollars.
In this case, I believe the investment you're referring to came from excess funds generated by the utility department. Which are not tax dollars. |

Oh! Okay, great. So is this why they won't lower the electric rates to people inside the city? |
So you're saying this won't be paid for by the the users, but by the city electric fund. This does seem to be the consultant's M.O. Float a loan from the electric department to get started and then watch out. There's a certain city in Indiana that having just this problem. |

no, they won't lower the electric rates because they don't NEED to - highland is already paying one of the lowest rates for electricity in the area. and yes, petunia - the city can use the extra money that comes from YOU wasting electricity on whatever THEY think smart - including two inexpensive consultants which were paid six tenths of one percent of the final projected cost to determine if this project was a good idea. so its looking like the project will make it to the voting ballot. if you don't like/approve of the project, feel free to get off your ass and vote against it. rest assured - those of us who actually UNDERSTAND what opportunities this will open up for highland will be there, voting to make it happen. |

Typical Liberal.
$100,000+ is "inexpensive". You're willing to spend tax money like it grows on trees. |

and, for hopefully the LAST TIME, it's NOT TAX MONEY. |

Like it matters where it comes from, isn't it all income to the city?

Personally, I can't wait for the fiber optic system to be installed. I'm told our cable, Internet, and telephone bills will be cut dramatically. I believe this because I'm sure Charter or any other cable/dish company will be cutting prices and making deals to compete with the new system. So if you or I decide we can do better elsewhere we have the choice. As it is now our only choice is take what Charter or the dish companies have to offer or put up an antenna.

This "project" has quadrupled in cost since it was first conceived by city hall....
I'm sure it will actually cost more then they now suspect. |
what's the matter, whiner ??? upset that we've got community support ???
go cry in the corner and let us grown ups worry about bringing Highland into the 21st century. |

I don't understand why intelligent informed individuals on this site even bother to respond to the deliberately ignorant. Of course owning our own utilties, ex. water, sewer treatment, electricy has been a boon to residents. We have decades of experience of profitably owning and operating our necessary resources. Now we will take independence from outside phone, cable and internet providers. What's to argue about.

I guess you could argue that the delivery systems for water, sewer and electricity haven't changed much since they were invented. Correct us if we're wrong that the technology of flushing your toilet or running water don't look like they'll change anytime soon.
Entering into the technology field opens the city up to something that changes frequently, and may even be obsolete in a few years. But I guess us ignoramuses shouldn't dare ever question the grown ups that are bringing us into the 21st century. I guess the grown ups "running" this town think we're a bunch of hicks and hayseeds that do not appreciate moving pictures and what not. |
