Bridge should be named Lejeune-Barrow

Jul 6, 2010 | Posted by: pragmatist | Full story: www.2theadvocate.com

The bridge being constructed over the Mississippi River between West Feliciana Parish and Pointe Coupee Parish should be named the Lejeune-Barrow Bridge instead of the John James Audubon Bridge.

Louisiana has the distinction of having been the home of two commandants of the U.S. Marine Corps, which is the highest-ranking officer in the Marine Corps: John A. Lejeune and Robert H. Barrow.

John A. Lejeune (1867-1942) grew up on the Old Hickory Plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish. After attending LSU, Lejeune joined the Marine Corps and rose through the ranks to become commandant of the Marine Corps from 1920-1929. Lejeune is considered by many to be the “greatest of all leathernecks,” and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina is named in his honor.

Across the river, Robert H. Barrow (1922-2008) was raised on Rosale Plantation in West Feliciana Parish. Barrow likewise attended LSU, and joined the Marine Corps after the outbreak of World War II, eventually rising to the rank of commandant of the Marine Corps from 1979-1983. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, Gen. Barrow returned home to West Feliciana Parish, a community he often described as being so peaceful, “You could hear a leaf drop on the water.” Gen. Barrow was the first commandant to decline being buried in Arlington National Cemetery, and instead chose as his final resting place the idyllic cemetery at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville.

Although not a native son, it is undisputed that John James Audubon was an important historical figure, as evidenced by the fact that the name, “John James Audubon Bridge,” has already been used previously for a bridge spanning the Ohio River. However, while the accomplishments of Audubon are many, he is associated mainly with West Feliciana Parish, and his name does not truly reflect the character of both Pointe Coupee Parish and West Feliciana Parish.

A bridge is supposed to connect two communities, both figuratively and literally. One common bond that the communities of Pointe Coupee Parish and West Feliciana Parish share is that these two parishes both produced commandants of the Marine Corps, the only parishes in our state that can boast such an accomplishment. Appropriately, the new bridge should be called the “Lejeune-Barrow Bridge” to reflect the contributions of both great men, and the parishes that they called home.

I agree! Name it after someone of relevance to both parishes. Why didn't we think of that before? Who decided on Audubon?

This would have been a wonderful name for the bridge; John James Audubon is over used in this area. Is it too late for a change?

It's not too late to change the name; the bridge is not scheduled for completion until fall of 2011. If you live in one of these two parishes (or you otherwise know a police juror there), please contact your police juror and tell him/her that you support the police jury passing a resolution urging the Legislature to change the name. You can also contact your state rep/senator from that area and urge them to sponsor legislation re-naming the bridge. This is a great way to honor the shared military heritage of both parishes. This would be a great way to memorialize these two American heroes, as well as preserve the history as it relates to both parishes. Have you contacted anyone with the Marine Corps about your efforts to have the name changed? I would think they could be instrumental in making this happen.

I have contacted the Marine Corps and they are very interested. Colonel David Couvillion (retired) said that he would arrange for a Marine presence at the police jury meeting when this matter comes up on the agenda. Also, it's my understanding that the Marine Corps is considering a press release of its own. That being said, the public officials need to hear from local citizens instead of just outsiders. If you send me an email, I will forward you the contact information for all of the public officials we need to reach. Be part of this effort and help leave a legacy. I agree the re-naming of the bridge is an appropriate salute to two great Americans.
The bridge actual belongs to the State of Louisiana and not either parish. DOTD, your State legislators and the Governors office would be the correct officials to get this done. Of course a proclamation from all the local officials would help tremendously. Hopefully this could be done before the bridge is open.

Just got word from the Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury that it has put the matter on its agenda and will discuss the item at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 13th, at 5 pm. The meeting will be held at the Annex Building which is across the street from the Courthouse. Please attend the meeting and express your support for the bridge being re-named. The police juror that I spoke to said there is a good chance the police jury will pass a Resolution asking the Legislature to re-name the bridge.

Someone needs to call the WF Jury, either their individual Juror or President Dawson to get it on the agenda for action.

Just received a call from Pointe Coupee police juror, Kurt Jarreau, who said the matter would not be on the agenda for this Tuesday. He said that they had received a call from the Governor's Office/Zachary Taylor Parkway Commission who asked that the matter be removed because they were going to discuss a compromise. What they are suggesting is that the ramps leading up the bridge be named for the respective generals. In other words, on the Pointe Coupee side, the approach would be named after General Lejeune, while on the West Feliciana side the ramp would be named after General Barrow, but the bridge would remain known as the Audubon Bridge. There rationale is that they have spent a considerable amount of money already on the name Audubon Bridge. We are going to meet with them on Tuesday to discuss. Our position is that the legacy of General Lejeune and General Barrow is more significant than a ramp. The bridge itself is a magnificent structure, and honoring Audubon with this structure rather than these two Commadants would be a travesty. Trevor

Above is a link for the contact information for the
Zachary Taylor Parkway Commission. Contact these members and tell them you want the bridge to be named the Lejeune-Barrow Bridge, and not just the ramps. This bridge is incredible and people will take countless pictures of it. Everytime it is shown, it will have the name "Lejeune-Barrow Bridge" thereby honoring these men. Who is going to take a picture of a ramp? Trevor

I still like the idea of calling it the Buddy's weiner bridge. It's a magnificent structure, too and should be honored.
