"An off-duty St. Clair Shores police officer was killed Friday night after a car crash in Harrison Township, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said today.

Around 11:30 p.m., Clinton Rice, who was in his early 50s, was traveling north on Jefferson near Manila when his Dodge Durango made a sharp left for an unknown reason into the southbound lane. The Durango was then T-boned on the passenger side by a Hummer H3. The impact threw Rice, who was not wearing a seatbelt, around inside his SUV. He suffered blunt-force head trauma and died on the scene, Hackel said.

The couple in the H3 was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, he said.

The accident is under investigation. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor, but they are trying to determine the cause. They said it is possible Rice had a medical condition before the crash.

St. Clair Shores police declined to comment for this story."

I know his family and kids, his sister graduated from high school today..
please pray for his face.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Det. Rice's family, friends and coworkers.
Officer Down Memorial Page [http://www.odmp.org] listed his death but now have retracted the article and he is no longer listed on the current year page [http://www.odmp.org/year.php] . Can anybody explain this?

To be listed on odmp.org your death must meet certain qualifications. Hope this helps.
FROM odmp.org
http://www.odmp.org/info/criteria.php

DISQUALIFYING CIRCUMSTANCES

Any law enforcement officer whose death meets one of the following conditions shall be ineligible to be included on the ODMP:

Deaths attributed to voluntary alcohol or controlled substance abuse or while the victim officer is under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance

Deaths caused by the intentional misconduct of the officer

Deaths caused by the officer's intention to bring about his/her own death

Deaths attributed to an officer performing his/her duty in a grossly negligent manner at time of death

Off-duty automobile accidents where the officer is not involved in any type of duty related activity

Off-duty law enforcement officers serving as overseas peace keepers, government contractors, or active-duty military
Private law enforcement, security, or corrections officers working for for-profit law enforcement companies (even if holding a state law enforcement commission)

I believe he would fall under off-duty auto accident.
Tragedy none the less.

Yes, I believe its a tragedy to say the least. However I have to ask myself a question during his tenure as a Police Officer, how many people is he responsible for arresting for drinking and driving and/or not wearing a seat belt? Now Mr. Chief it would appear that your department will be involved in another law-suite from the people in the Hummer. I think you are doing a marvelous job of having control of your personnel on duty and off. Next you'll be asking the residents and taxpayers for another millage increase just to cover the law- suits you've encountered since being Chief or to pay the increased insurance premiums. Way to go.

In your position, I figured you would make that type of a statement. However, correct me if I am wrong, it was my understanding that a policeman is on duty 24/7. They may only recieve pay for there duration in uniform or at the work place, however they are on duty 24/7, just for your information.

I would have to agree, while the event was tragic his actions could have cost others their lives and that is unacceptable.

If he would have lived would he has lost his job?

So i guess by your statement the Chief should have control of a person working for him 24/7. This is a tragedy no matter how you look at it. I guess you have never made mistakes and are as pure as gold. I myself have driven drunk before. It was stupid I admit and I thank god that nothing happened to me or anybody else. So I guess feel for the family and co-workers and not look at anything else. I think they have all suffered enough and no matter how you look at it one person can't stop another from making mistakes no matter how tight of a reign you put on them.
