When we took out H&R Block's Peace of Mind Guarantee when they prepared our 2006 tax return, we never in our wildest imagination thought they could make such huge mistakes - mistakes totalling over $16,000. We received a tax refund in 2006 for over $6,300 originally...now we need to pay back close to $13,000....all because of extremely fundamental but very large mistakes. They weren't even difficult aspects of the return - apparently a novice preparer would not make the mistakes they made. But we trusted them. While they have paid us back for their mistakes according the maximum allowed under their Peace of Mind Guarantee ($7,300) they refuse to consider paying the difference, a difference we cannot afford. They insist on keeping to the letter of their Peace of Mind guarantee which is capped at, I assume, a typical large error amount ($5,000 plus penalties, interest and costs). I'm sure an error of $13,000+ surprised even them....but they will not budge. I think this particular mistake needs an exception to their rule and we want them to pay us in full.
