Council gives green light for Orange Cove Police Dept.

In July of 2008, "ADRIANA" posted this query regarding a petition for an OC Police Department;

That was a good idea at the time ADRIANA.

However, the CITIZENS of Orange Cove (via Manuel Ferreira for one) maintained a consistent clarion call to the City Council and City Administrator, who subsequently scheduled THREE Town Hall Meetings regarding the organization and funding for a Police Department in Orange Cove.

EACH Town Hall Meeting provided the Council and Administrator with a consensus that the residents of Orange Cove were insisting on a Police Department. The June 18 meeting included a financial summary that provided a fiscal path to the OCPD.

In the attached article from the “Orange Cove and Mountain Times” explains, the City Council directed the City Administrator to proceed with a Police Chief search and filing for POST certification (http://www.post.ca.gov/ ).

It required ONE YEAR for action and results ADRIANA, but the residents of Orange Cove prevailed with a sensible plan. That was in spite of the extraordinary effort by VICTOR LOPEZ and his supporters (see comment below) to use dis-information and rumors that an OCPD is not possible.

Was VICTOR LOPEZ really concerned about the money involved in an OCPD, or, was this another "legacy" move from he and his followers? Lopez was attempting to cover his tracks - his numerous published and spoken statements; "There will never be a police department in Orange Cove as long as I am mayor...", were about to be disproved.

In 15 months he will not be mayor, and there will be an OCPD operating, or in the final stages of opening, with officers on the streets of Orange Cove.

The above is typical of the Lopez supporter response ... personal attacks and trash talk. That is the only option for those unable to provide a logical argument for or against an issue.

YAY!! I am a taxpayer and I would be more than happy to help support the local police department. It is about time! I am sorry things did not go the way that Mayor Lopez or Mrs. DelBosque wanted it to go, but I really do feel that this time the people spoke and they were heard. With the community working together as one, and not so damned divided, mabybe we can get the town back and begin to enjoy life again without fear or anguish of what can happen to us, or our children.

So it had to take all these shootings and killings to finally get a police dept. in Orange Cove. How said is that?

Cameraman. Manuel was correct in what he said in the paper. Also, Manuel is 73 years old, but if I were to tie one of his arms behind his back, and blindfold him, then give you a stick to beat him with, he would still dis-arm you and knock you senseless. You know it.

The sheriff's dept. operates within the county of Fresno. That is the jurisdiction. Orange Cove is in the county of Fresno. So all of the sheriff's agencies, whether property crime, drug enforcement, investigation units, etc., all are available to Orange Cove at the request of the police dept., in addition to the rounds they would be making in the county area just outside of town. Get your head out of your rear end, cameraman, it's gotta be uncomfortable in there. Oh, sorry, un-com-for-ta-ble. There, that should help you to understand.

Case in point - that other newspaper ("Fresno Bee", July 23) published a article with the headline; "Kerman couple fatally shot".

I assume you know that a "newspaper article" has a lot of words and many of them have two or more syllables, so it may be difficult for you to understand. I'll just print the cogent segment of the article that proves you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about (re: Manuel Ferreira letter in the "Orange Cove and Mountain Times").

I'll explain that to YOU in case you have difficulty with all those words. The Fresno County Sheriff's Department DETECTIVES (and that will include forensic and crime lab) will assume responsibility for this murder case.

Just another City Council meeting in Orange Cove ...

Orange Cove City Council meetings are almost always entertaining -- especially these days when three council members elected in recent years are often at odds with Mayor Victor Lopez and his longtime ally, Councilwoman Bertha Del Bosque.

The July 8 meeting was no exception. This time a former councilwoman, Diana Guerra Silva, joined in on the fun. The last 30 seconds of a video on The Orange Cove & Mountain Times Web site records Silva suddenly veering off-track from a discussion about a proposed police department in Orange Cove and yelling at Councilwoman Glenda Hill for allegedly not paying her business license fees.

"If you were so serious about bringing in money, why didn't you pay your business license 20 years ago?" Silva shouted. "You've been stealing from the coffers of the city of Orange Cove!"

That caused a ruckus. Some people started shouting back, others booed. Shouting over it all, Silva kept yelling: "I'm sorry, that is a fact. It's a fact. It's a fact."

Someone yelled, "Get her out of here!"

Then the video ends.

Welcome to Orange Cove.

I sent an email to Hill today to get her response on the accusations. I will keep you posted if I hear back.

Those of us that attend City Council meetings on a regular basis know that the "alleged city business license fee" issue is bogus. The City Attorney has written reports that they do not have to pay business licenses for their residence.

[] as a community, what can we do to attract businesses that bring jobs?
