Im sorry for the bears death. I know we cant do nothing

about it now. But the bears should of never been killed also

should of never been thrown into to a local landfill. they

should of been rested in the heart of MaymontPark(its very

sad. The parents should be charged with child endangerment

fo leting the child on the other side of the 4ft wooden

fence. it was clearly said that no one past this point, so

they were breaking the rules. The bears have been there for

years and have not hurt a fly. there was noreason for these

actions to have been taking. The parents had the chance to

get the shots or kill ( but no they have to kill.)People

like this should NOT come to wild life parks.

SOMTHING NEEDS TO HAPPEN QUITLY ABOUT THISS

PRAY PLEASE

I had not heard the news regarding the irresponsible parents/parent that allowed their 4 year old child to climb a four foot fence, to get to another chain link fence, where to innocent bears live. How does a four year old get to do that and not be watched by their responsible parents. So because you have irresponsible parents two innocent bears had to die. How insane is that????? If the child fell off the 4 foot fence before he climbed over, let me guess, sue the park, oh know better yet lets give the needle to the person that put the fence up, since it was only 4 feet and then the chain link had holes in it. It seems to me, these parents are not very responsible, do not appreciate and respect wildlife. As a parent myself I would never take the life of an innocent animal, because I was negligent. Be grateful you still have a child and its life was not taken, like you took the bears. Your child was not even missing a limb, be grateful over your situation. Two bears died, because you were not parenting your child, which is your job. You came to their home!!!Shame on You Parents, and whoever made this ungodly decision. Pray everday Thou shall not Kill

I completly agree with you "cheryl"!!! but not only were we led to believe that the parent just wasn't watching the FOUR YEAR OLD boy, I read in the paper that the parent climbed over the four foot fence WITH the child to feed the bear an apple!! CAN you believe it?? And after the child was bitten they left the park (with out telling ANY park officials about the bite) and three or four hours later went to the hospital. The child did not even Require stiches!! It is completly rediculous. The parent should have to pay for new bears AND the cost of the surgery to see if the bears had Rabies (which they did not)!!

Animal Lover, you are so right. This is scandalous! Shame on the parents. Reminds me a stupid thing I did once at a lake. Saw a cute little baby cub and stood there watching thinking,'how special'. Forgot common sense and that a Momma bear could be near. Had my four year old with me. Thank God my group started shouting at me to get away with my child. Damn, that was idiotic of me. And I was just observing. Stooopid huh?

I only feel sorry of the Bears and the ignorant white folks that think they can tame the world and wild beasts. It's sad the child was biten, but that is what wild animals do. They cannot talk or push you away from their cubs gently, so they bite your dumb butts. I say, white man, stop infringing on nature. You never heard of the Red man/true American hunting animals to extinction for sport or otherwise. Understand the laws of nature and you "God" and learn to respect just that. Who is really more savage? The dead Bears of the folks coming to visit them in their restricted prison? Hmmmm

Dear Bears, stay in the woods and take your chances with the hunters. At least they don't cage you to put you down. The bears stood a better chance out in the wild!

This whole situation is appalling and an abomination. We put two bears behind bars, put them on display, then punish them for doing what comes naturally - protecting themselves from intruders. To add insult to injury, we then toss them into a land fill where other bears and scavengers can have a feast. How idiotic! How stupid! How uncaring! The mother is the one that should be punished. If she cannot take care of her child properly, perhaps she shouldn't be allowed to keep her child. I, for one, am glad I'm not a bear, or any other animal for that matter. God knows what would become of me if the government becomes involved.

until people learn that wild animals are not pets or toys and should be left alone, you will always have very sad and unnecessary incidents like this. as human beings we are born with the attitude that everything is here for our personal use or enjoyment, and when it has the audacity to react or hurt us, we strike back...i wonder what would happen if the animals decided to treat us the way we treat them? then whos's fault would it be if we hurt one of them?

Thank you so much for saying that. I was appauld to hear about these bears. I lived in that area for numerous years, the park itself is really nice and serene. I would teach my kids 1. listen to me i'm the boss 2. read the sign Do not enter type clearly stated at park, I've seenit and read it myself. Shame shame on both the parents and the curators of Maymont, more investigation and consideration of the circumstances should have been presented in the place of all the HASTE to Kill.. what in the hell has gotten into people?

New bears may be coming to Maymont. That word came Wednesday as Richmond releases its final report on the Maymont bear investigation.

The 17-page report says the state will look for two new bears to replace the pair killed in February after a young boy was bitten.

It also states that measures will be taken against some Richmond employees who didn't take appropriate action. Changes will also be made to improve communication between city and state agencies..
