Don't tell me there is another "ponzi scheme" going on! Are people that STUPID? Then to top it off, this guy represents the County on the Commission. That speaks volumes for Robertson County. Make us proud, Mr. Polen.

This guy is a greasy as they come. Even before this came to light, my perception of the County Commision is completely negative due to the fact that people like this are actually running the County. Nepotism and conflict of interest issues are decades behind in Robertson County. This guy is a crook.

Where is he anyway? Will he have to resign from the County Commission? He SHOULD that's for sure. He should do that on his own.

Hey, "not another one" as a victim of Mr. Polen, I can state that not one of the many fellow victims I have met are stupid. They were family, friends, neighbors and fellow polititions. Be glad you didn't meet him because you may have lightened your wallet, too. Be thankful, not insulting.

I hate this for so many reasons I have known Shannon and his family for nearly 30 years. Something happened along the way because he was not raised this way and his family are good people. The Shanon I grew up knowing wouldn't have donr this, but I guess desperate people do desperate things. I feel sorry for the victims which in my mind also includes his wife and children who will now be robbed of time with their husband and father. We all make our bed and we should be careful because eventually we will have to lay in it.

Ted- I'm sorry to hear that you are one of his victims and I for one think it says nothing about intelligence. Sadly, it is often people who are more trusting and tend to see the good in others instead of the bad who get taken, so in that regard it says something good about your character.(not that this helps your finances!)
Anyway, would you (or anyone else who knows) please describe in some detail exactly how you (or others)got taken. In others, what was the story, what did he tell you (or anyone else) to get your money? what was the agreement/promise? when did you know you'd been ripped off? I know shannon on site and he seemed nice and respectable....obviously looks are deceiving! ha. Anyway, the news has very little detail and I and many others are curious!

I have known Shannon for a long time. He is neither evil nor a sociopath. Everyone who knows Shannon knows that he is a character and is far from perfect. I think he got in over his head. I am sure that he never meant to steal money from people. I think he always meant to pay people back, but it got out of control. He will have to be accountable for his actions, but sometimes good people do bad things, especially when they panic which is what I believe happened. It's interesting to me that the "victims" invested their money with a landscaper instead of someone licensed. They thought they were getting in on an inside deal. In short, they gambled and lost. I don't feel completely sorry for them.

It's sad when people take pleasure in the misfortunes of other people. This is a sad situation. It seems Shannon made some serious mistakes and if convicted he will pay for those mistakes. Remember that Shannon is a human being with a family, a wife, and friends who care about him. I am not sure how people are convinced to invest so much money with someone who isn't an investor, but of course I feel terrible for anyone who invests in something they think is legitimate only to lose money. I think everyone involved is in need of prayer.

really... maybe we should give hugs as punishment... All I'm saying is you get what's coming. I'm a firm believer in Karma, that's all.

Let's all get some perspective here. Joe you have made some very good points and I agree with you. Families are hurting, including Shannon's. I am not a fan of Shannon nor do I defend him in the least. Regardless of what he did or didnt do with the money from "investors"...the people who "invested" with him knew the risks were great and traded these risks for the chance of even greater returns on their money! They got GREEDY too! Remember--"Money is the root of all evil."

Joe, and RobCoProud, You are so right. I feel so bad for the victims, Shannon's family, and even Shannon. People know when they are investing in "a deal of a lifetime", it seldom works out. Let's give this family a break and let the Courts take care of him. Remember, though, anything that sounds too good to be true, more than likely is!!! Be careful what you invest in.

Brenda, glad you chimed in on the side of reality and common-sense. I was beginning to wonder if most had a heart of stone and absolutely zero compassion for people during hardship and suffering. It is a very sad state of affairs for all involved.

If you are referring to the Biblical reference, money is not the root of all evil. Rather, "the love of money..."
3. 1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

"Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy:
who art thou that judgest another?"

Listen people... You may have known this man all your life. He may have been a good guy. He may have done something to help you in the past or be one of the people you voted for during his campaign. but don't make excuses for him. the man who called him evil and a sociopathic liar is his own family... Any man who would take his own family, friends and businessmen to the cleaners is evil. He has had issues his whole life with gambling, and the IRS. His mother is the one who covered his as* all these years to keep the Polen name "clean". That whole family is a bunch of manipulators. They are very very very good at what they do. He deserves EVERYTHING he gets!!!!!

It's sad...all the events and who have lost money that might be retirement or other savings for emergency situations such as a healthcare issue. I do suggest that we do not throw people into boxes that don't belong in. I've known the Polen family for a long time and have positive experiences to reflect upon. Shannon is an adult and he is responsible for himself and his actions...not his mother or brother. Troy is a fine person and is a man of good character so again, don't put others into a box they don't belong. Let's keep focus on the issues at hand and let the legal system run it's course. Trust and greed is involved with all the individuals involved in the case. Let's hope that money can be recovered by those that are at a loss. Let's examine what lead to this incident and hope that none of us are ever at the same crossing point and choose to take the same path. Most people don't do what is right because it is difficult!

I found some of the posts about Shannon's investors' being greeding a bit disturbing. Yes, I do not understand why someone would invest their money with someone that owns a landscaping company, BUT Shannon used his County Commissioner status and, I'm assuming, lied about having the backing from former Gov. Bredesen. Shannon convinced people to put their trust and money with him, and unfortunately, people lost everything.

I have known Shannon for 20+ years. We were contacted about a year ago to invest in his 'company'. Because of his elected position, he was going to get the contract to clean up the ash spill in East Tennessee and we would see a great return on our investment. We knew Shannon, and knew better. I think when someone you considered a friend tries to swindled you out of thousands of dollars, your perspective of how sorry you feel for him drastically changes.
