I would like to start a discussion on the difference in the quality of public education between the Williamson County side of Spring Hill, vs. the Maury County side. My hypothesis is that there is none, but it's just a hypothesis - I have nothing to base that on as I have never seen a true comparison. I'm not talking about the perceived difference, which clearly favors Williamson, and does have a real impact on real estate prices. I'm talking about the real, tangible differences in teachers, supplies, school safety, whatever. I mean, does the school system in Brentwood or Franklin really have that much impact on Spring Hill, Williamson other than reputation? And are Columbia/Maury Schools really worse in any kind of meaningful measure? I guess another way to put it is - is it worth paying a premium to live on the Williamson County side of Spring Hill, if in fact the schools on the Maury County side as good or close to it?

Thanks...sorry to hear about your experience. But just to clarify, I'm wondering more about Spring Hill schools specifically (Spring Hill Elementary, the new Marvin Wright Elementary, Cox Middle School (although I know a new middle school is coming), and Spring Hill High School).

It's probably hard to argue that on the whole, Williamson County schools are better than Maury County schools. But given Spring Hill's situation, where the county line splits the city, I wonder if it matters a whole lot whether you go to, say, Longview Elementary vs. Marvin Wright.

Well, I expect by the time my kids are in middle school that they would be going to the new school in Spring Hill rather than Cox, but until that school is actually built we're looking at Spring Hill Elementary, Marvin Wright, EA Cox, and Spring Hill High School.

THERE IS A DEFINITE DEFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IN WILLAMSON COUNTY! THE SCHOOLS HAVE THE BENEFIT OF MORE TAX DOLLARS (HIGHER PROPERTY TAX ETC) AND THEREFORE HAVE BETTER TECHNOLOGY, BETTER EQUIPT CLASSROOMS, ETC. ALSO THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TEACHER PAY (WILLIAMSON IS MUCH BETTER THAN MAURY) THEREFORE THEY CAN ATTRACT AND RETAIN BETTER TEACHERS.

IT MATTERS NOT WHICH SIDE OF MAURY COUNTY ONE RESIDES; MAURY COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE WHAT THEY ARE BECAUSE THE ENTIRE COUNTY IS WOEFULLY BEHIND THE SURROUNDING COUNTIES (WILLIAMSON, RUTHERFORD, & DAVIDSON) FOR REASONS TO LENGTHY FOR THIS POST. THE ENTIRE COUNTY (MAURY) WAS ON THE STATE'S "BAD LIST" FOR NOT BEING UP TO PAR ON TEST SCORES!

AS FOR COLUMBIA ACADEMY....MANY OF THEIR GRADUATING STUDENTS END UP IN REMEDIAL COURSES IN COLLEGE BECAUSE OF THE POOR EDUCATION THEY RECEIVE THERE. TRY A REAL PRIVATE SCHOOL LIKE BGA, FRA, ENSWORTH, OR OAK HILL. IT WOULD BE WELL WORTH YOUR DRIVE!!!!

Our children go to HMS and HES and we are very very happy. I don't know how good the maury county side is and don't know anyone who sends their children there but I did want to say that we are very pleased with Heritage Middle School and Heritage Elementary School.
Thanks

My daughter attended Spring Hill Elem and Wright. We moved last year and she started Cox this year. I can not express how horrible this experience has been for us at Cox. She had a wonderful experience at Spring Hill and Wright and was always so happy and anxious to learn. She has cried almost every day since being at Cox and now HATES school. My daughter has turned a total 360. She's had problems with the teachers, a few bullies and the learning material. There is a different 'breed' between Spring Hill and surrounding Maury Co Schools. I was excited to hear a new middle school is being built in the Spring Hill area.

Drugs and gangs are every where including Spring Hill and Williamson County. And the situations are not easy to avoid. And it would best suite parents to relaize this. It would keep your kids safer and alive a lot longer.

Every time we register our kids for school at Heritage, the principal reminds us that we need 2 proofs of residency, because they have had so many people from 'other' school districts (Maury County) trying to get their kids into the Williamson County schools because they are so much better.
If you are interested in comparing things such as numbers of kids who finish, are on subsidized lunches, teacher ratios, etc., check out 'www.greatschools.net '.
But if they dump in all the apartments I keep reading about, all bets are off for Spring Hill on the Williamson side. Schools will be more crowded quicker than they will be able to handle and you'll see your kids being babysat, not taught. Been there, seen it before moving here...not pretty. We moved here to get away from crime, gangs, overcrowded schools, traffic, apartments etc... Wish somebody would wise up and let infrastructure and growth be appropriate for each other.

I recently graduated from Spring Hill High School, while it is not the best, it certainly isn't that bad. Some of the teachers don't care, but at what school does EVERY teacher care? It has some pretty bad drug problems. I went to Cox during my middle school years, and let me tell you THAT IS THE WORST SCHOOL EVER MADE. The principals suck, and the teachers are very hard to get along with.

Columbia Academy is a JOKE! They recently made national news for reprimanding five teachers who attended a church that played INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC! Columbia Academy also inherits all the druggies who get kicked out of the public schools, and their curriculum is horrible. Do your homework, honey. Columbia Academy may be facing a lawsuit for discriminating agains these five teachers. They asked them to sign a legal document stating they would not attend a church with instrumental music (horrors!), but they failed to ask the entire staff to sign the contract. THAT is discrimination, my friend.

I teach in williamson county. A perosn in a previous post stated that teachers make more in williamson co. You can check that information on most school system websites. Do a quick search and you will discover that williamson county teachers DO NOT make more than maury co teacher. Just becaue you throw money at a school does not make it better! I was educated in one of the poorest school systems in the state, but i recieved a great education. When i went to college i discovered that i recieved a better education that many people from williamson co. More money does not equal better education. It helps, but is not the only thing that contributes to a good education.
A previous post also said that Williamson co schools have more technology. This is true, but it they do not spend time and money to train teachers how to use it then it is pointless. My school has alot of techology(i.e. smart boards, e-clicks and projectors), but it sits unused and colleting dust because the teacher have never been trained to use it. To me it seems williamson co buys techonolyg just so they can publicise that they have it.

If you look at the US wide ratings of schools, TN is at the bottom of the chain, so, no, Williamson County can not be that much better because ALL of the schools in TN are much worse than most of the other states. We moved here from FL and are shocked at how behind the schools are as opposed to there. That is the main reason we are moving back to FL. My child is in 1st grade here and is doing things she did in kindergarten in FL. Very sad.
