May 1976 Murder

I am related to Nanette Martin's stepdad. I was around 11 @ the time she was murdered. From what I found out Thomas Mahrt is still in the Airway Heights correction. He is convicted until 2096. I am trying to find out more. Her mom passed away somewhere between 1996-1998 i don't remember the exact year. Her stepdad hangs at my house on the weekends now as he really has no one now because Lori turned into a not very nice person and he really has no one to be around so we kind of took him under our wing, he is family afterall & we love him. It really hurt him when Nan was found & then his wife passes, he has to move & the one child left turned into a b***h. We all still hurt from the death of Nanette.

I work at Airway Heights Correction Center. Thomas Mahrt was moved from the facility to another facility a few years ago when I realized that he was there. I am Nanette's cousin. He will never get out. He will die in prison and then some day he will have his day with God. I don't think that it will go well for him.

I was nans cousin her step dad stays alot of weekends with myself and family.Thomas Mahrt is locked up at the Airway Heights Corrections facility this is not a maximum security facility. His release date is not until 2096.

Do you know or how can we find out where he has been moved or where he is now? Nans step dad would like to keep track of him. We all miss her very nuch.

Last I knew, he was at Stafford Creek Corrections Center. I do know that he will never get out and that he will have his day with God. I am just so happy that Nan's murder was not one that slipped through the cracks and that we know where the monster is that did this horrible thing. I am sure that Nan will be in Heaven, sitting with Jesus and looking like an angel. God Bless all of you and your families.

First off I can't believe anyone would call Nan's sister Lori that. you don't know what she went through with Nan dying... I was there and my family. I was good friends with Nan, We walked to school together everyday ( Havermale). her mom and stepdad Butch were devastated.... our family stayed in contact and fished together for years after. until Margret died and I lost contact with butch and Lori.... I'm still haunted about what happened to this day, I have never been able to get past what happened. I will never forget you Nan...... Valerie

I remember Nanette Martin well. I went to school with her, was in the same grade. Although we were not close.( i was shy)
I will never forget coming home from school one day and there she was on tv! How I had hoped she would be found alive. But then hearing she had been dismembered made me ill.
I had nightmares for years. My heart still aches when I hear the song bridge over troubled waters, which was played for her.

They did catch the monster that did this to Nanette and her family. Her family has never got over this and never will. He is still in prison and will never get out. I believe that they caught him within a matter of weeks. What a small world that we live in. Nanette was my cousin and I was only 9 years old when this happened. My best friend was talking about this one day and I learned that she and Nanette went to school together and were really good friends. I just want to say how sorry I am about what happened to Nanette. I went to school with her. Didn't know her that well, but I was pretty shy, and kept to myself.
My deepest sympathies to you and your family. I am glad to hear that the person responsible is in prison, where he belongs...

today, 4-3-76, 35 years ago on this day nan was murdered. it was a horrible thing that happened to her, we will never forget it. most of all we will never forget nan. sometimes it like life stands still and we are stuck in the nightmare of this. we love, miss and will never forget you nan.

Nan was my babysitter and was supposed to babysit me and my brother the day she came up missing. I was only 2 years old at the time but through the years my mom has always talked about her. I have recently moved to Spokane and we are going to go visit her grave (I was told she is buried by my grandma) at Pines Cemetary. I have researched her story and all the details and am glad her murderer is locked away for life. I hope he has suffered the way that he made her and her family suffer. Love to you all...

I am so glad I found this. In 1976 I was 11 years old and I remember this horrific crime. For years, I tried to remember her name and when I asked family members or friends, no one seemed to know about it or remember it. Last night, Nanette's name came to me in a dream. I woke up & wrote it down before I forgot her name. I am so grateful for those who made this site, because she should never be forgotten. For a while, I thought I had made up this crime in my mind. I don't know if her family ever sees this, but I pray for them, as the pain of this awful murder never goes away. I hope they found some kind of peace over the years. I think it is important to remember Nanette and keep her memory alive. Thank you all who have shared.

I should have said also that Nanette's name was forever burned in my mind, but due to age & side effects of medication.. my mind isn't as sharp as it use to be. For years I tried to find out what happened and only recently (last couple years), I just couldn't get her name back. I am so glad it came to me last night. I too was changed forever knowing that there were monsters out there that could do horrific crimes to children. Life changed forever then. I think all of the children in Spokane lost their sense of safety & innocence when this happened. My parents were always protective & knew where I was going, but after her murder.. I just remember that I didn't walk alone anywhere after that. Still after this many years, it still makes my heart ache.

Where did she live when she was taken and where was she murdered at? I just saw the post above mine, that TODAY .....35 years ago she passed. I don't really believe in the supernatural, but to have a dream that woke me up last night, April 3rd, is just too creepy. I don't know if the paper has the article online, but I will try and look for it. To her family, again.. I give you my heart felt love.

I happen to know Lori & from what i know of her she is a very decent person who is hurting still to this day over the tragic loss of her sister and her Mother who passed away 14 years ago

I am Nans sister. Please do not make assumptions or accusations on things or people you know NOTHING about. I am referring to your remarks about ME. Maybe you can identify yourself? I am guessing you are one of JoAnns kids. I will not air things in a public forum, just know that I have my reasons and if you ask him to do a little soul searching maybe he can tell you. I'm sure he knows what they are. My mother passed away December 18, 1998. I placed her with Nan.

and why would you stoop so low as to call nan's sister a bitch after what she and her family has gone thru, you sound like a real classy piece of work, sure glad i'm not there where i can talk to you man to man, you would not like the end results, so zip it and keep it zipped, nan's father

why would anyone stoop as low as a snake in the grass to say nan's sister is a bitch after loosing her sister, this is the sign of a real low life, i'm sure he can't help himself as water runs deep, i suggest people keep it zipped, i'm sure you would not like to talk to me man to man, trust me, may my daughter's soul rest in peace, we all are still devastated to this day by what happened "dad"
