SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATING DOUBLE HOMICIDE AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
October 27, 2011
by: Dwayne Page
Two women were found dead of gunshot wounds at a residence on Allen's Chapel Road this afternoon and a person of interest who may have been responsible for the shooting is being treated at DeKalb Community Hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told WJLE that "We came here (scene of the crime) on a 911 call from a man who stated that we needed to come to this home on Allen's Chapel Road to check on the welfare of some children".

"When officers arrived they found the front door locked. They went around the back of the house and saw blood. They made entry into the house and brought out two small children. They also found two bodies lying in the house. Both were females and both had been shot."

"We were able to identify a person of interest after the shooting and we had been trying to find him when one of the deputies spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the suspect. He ran the tag and confirmed that it was him. The officer then attempted to stop the vehicle outside the city limits of Smithville on Highway 56 north. The driver of the vehicle finally stopped near the intersection of Rolling Acres Road and apparently shot himself. He was taken to DeKalb Community Hospital

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department and TBI are investigating along with the District Attorney General's Office. Members of the Smithville Police Department and THP have also been on the scene. Names of the victims have not yet been released.

Murder Suspect Dies
October 29, 2011
by: Dwayne Page

The man believed to have been responsible for the deaths of his ex girlfriend and her step mother on Thursday has died.

Sheriff Patrick Ray told WJLE that 22 year old Brandon Michael Gray of Foster Road, Smithville died Friday evening at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville where he was being treated for a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities believe that Gray shot and stabbed his ex-girlfriend, 21 year old Heather Nichole Eley and her step mother, 42 year old Lori Ann Eley at their residence on Allens Chapel Road on Thursday afternoon and later called 911 to have officers do a welfare check on his two young children who were also in the home.

Officers later spotted Gray leaving the Mapco Express in a Mazda car. They initiated a pursuit on Cookeville Highway. Gray pulled over near Rolling Acres Road and shot himself. He was first taken by DeKalb EMS to DeKalb Community Hospital and then to Vanderbilt Hospital.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Nashville for an autopsy.

The Sheriff's Department and TBI Special Agent Billy Miller have been investigating but have not released any information as to a possible motive for the murders.

(AND I DO NOT BELIEVE HE SHOT HIMSELF, the stories do not match up to the scanner talk! They say they heard a shot and ran up there and found him that way, well, we all know if they hear a shot, they are NOT gonna go run up there because they do not know WHAT he is shooting at! Another thing, I heard them chasing him, he stopped, they yelled, He's attempting to get out! Then they went silent a few minutes (probably switched over) and then asked them to send EMS to that location, after cancelling bolo, saying they had subject at the scene...then they followed them up to the hospital, after saying helicopter would not fly, due to weather...words on scanner doesn't add up to the story that keeps geting changed

It doesn't make any difference now, he must answer for taking two innocent lives and scarring those two children for the rest of their lives...

Hello sorry for such an old bump. Anyways its almost been one year since this happened. It has impacted me in such a harsh way, because that was my sister and step-mom Brandon decided for some strange reason to kill. Anyways to clear some things up. Brandon did shoot himself in the head. I saw the car he did in it as that was my sisters car. The reason no helicopter flew out was because he was already dead. That brought him back to life to preserve his organs as he was an organ donor. Hope that clears up some things.

Heather babysit my kids for over a year. Actually up until 3 weeks before this happened. She was a beautiful girl with the prettiest smile. I'm very lucky I had the chance to know her and she was wonderful with my children

It's so hard to imagine that Brandon could do such a horrible thing and leave 2 children without their parents. I never knew Heather, but she seems very lovely from her pictures. I'm so sorry that Brandon did such a terrible thing to her. Brandon and I were best friends for a while but drifted apart in high school. He grew up in a strict religious household and was such a good, sweet boy (although acted like a crazy teen sometimes). I've been wondering if things could have been different if I stayed in touch to help him with whatever trouble he went through. Does anyone have any idea why he did this? Was he abusive or into drugs?

I grew up with Brandon. He was as nice as can be and doesn't deserve to be called "evil" he clearly had some mental issues. I could never imagine what was going through his mind that day. A true tragedy for all families involved. RIP to Heather and RIP Brandon we miss all our fun times with you.
