Dear friends, neighbors and concerned citizens of Southern Shores.



I am honored to have the privilege to serve as your Mayor and I ask for your support in my bid for re-election. I make this request based on my record of success and accomplishment and in doing so, I ask you to please check the records of both candidates and verify the facts to be a fully informed voter. Early voting began October 15th and it is important that you are armed with the facts before heading to the polls.



The following facts are clear regarding my opponent, candidate for Mayor in Southern Shores and they are easy to check!



At Wednesday’s “Meet the Candidates Forum”, my opponent said he “was careless and had not checked the facts” before sending his campaign letter or emails.
He could not recall that he had challenged the ethics of the Town staff, Town Council, and the Town’s wonderful volunteers in his campaign letter and did not have adequate answers to that question – I refer you to his letter for verification.
At the same forum and in his campaign materials, my opponent said he would raise taxes but never provided any specifics about when, how high, or what he would do with it – again please see his campaign letter.
My opponent wants another chance to raise your taxes. When on Council, he always voted to raise your taxes. In his campaign letter he compared the Southern Shores tax rate to the Town of Duck and again he got his figures wrong.
During his year and a half term as the appointed Mayor, my opponent voted to raise your taxes approximately 25% at a time when the inflation rate was running about 3% per year.
My opponent said that to cut the budget he “would look at the administration”. Who does he want to fire this time? When he was the appointed Mayor, then Town Manager Carl Classen threatened to fire Merrie Smith because her husband was a candidate for Mayor – a clear violation of state law and easily verified.
Saying “it was a waste of money”, my opponent went on record saying he does not support the Local Legislation calling for a Special Election to fill any vacancy on Town Council. The present Council, under the leadership of Mayor Don Smith, unanimously supports this legislation and believes the estimated cost of $3000 is well worth the expense to protect the democratic elective process. My opponent would rather appoint someone from the good old boys network just as he was appointed. Remember, my opponent was never elected as Mayor. The bottom line is that a vote for him may actually be a vote for someone else. The question is who has he handpicked to be his successor?
My opponent is also wrong about the Capital Improvement Plan. The Town’s comprehensive CIP was developed by the current Town Manager and unanimously adopted by Town Council in 2008. The CIP has been funded and it has been implemented with the full-depth-rebuild of Hickory, a new cul-de-sac on E. Holly, asphalt rejuvenation on Kingfisher and Soundview, multi-use path completion on Juniper and all projects were done in accordance with Town Council’s unanimously approved pay as we go policy – all these projects were done on time and under budget. Check the Town records or read the Town Council Meeting minutes to verify.


If my opponent is “careless” now, just imagine the harm he could do as the leader of our Town Council!

With your poor attendance at council meetings how have you become such an expert on what is wrong with the town and other than raising taxes what would you do differently? How is it that you are right and all of town council is wrong on maintaining fiscal responsibility?
