Opponents of proposed 'megadairy' in northwest Illinois promise...

I am so #*$* sick of people, no matter who they are or who they represent, fighting every single thing that tries to be built. No matter what it is, I am surprised anything can be built in this country. We can have a viable energy producer in this country in windmill farms, but because it will take away from somebodys view they are fought against. And please don't come after me that I would not say this if something were trying to be built by me. I have had many project in my area.

this project will allow manure to leach into the ground ( water used by neighbors for drinking). the limestone under the two 40 acre clay lined holding ponds will ( according to illinois state geological staff) will allow seepage to enter the ground water.
care to visit the neighbors for a drink from their well when the project is done? if people are only concerned when the project is in their neighborhood, then any thing can be built. if i am not hurt, go ahead and do it. |

why are there no links after this article telling us where we can get more info, or protest? i'm completely against this--i see all sorts of problems.

The methane digester was and is not part of the filed plans. it is only a "promise" and is not binding.
10,000 cows on 80 acres of which 60 will be holding ponds for manure-it will not smell or so we are told. it may leak manure into the ground water at levels ok with state. do you want e-coli in your drinking water? this is a farm (# cows) that is bigger than the combined total for the entire county. they at changed what they intend to to do and refused to let locals see the plans - trade secrets being the reason. it is a long way from chicago or the suburbs and unless you go the galena it will not even be noticed by you east of here. it will be a factor -negative_ to us. we are told by iepa and ioda ,"trust us, we will take care of your interests" we have read and heard of similar broken promises other places and want more than promises. we want a plan to guarantee no damage to us or no building. our homes and property are at risk. |

This mega-dairy is a move in the wrong direction for Illinois agriculture, but what else do you expect from the Blagojevich administration?
Here's a link for the neighbors opposed to this monstrosity: http://www.stopthemegadairy.org/index.html And here's a link to a better approach to agriculture Jo Daviess county, the kind our state should be promoting instead: http://arnoldsfarm.com/ |
Read the article again.... "Bos plans to milk 4,400 cows at the farm near the tiny town of Nora, a few miles from picturesque Apple River Canyon State Park. He has acquired enough property to build a second farm of the same size, but he would need another permit from the state. Bos already has purchased 1,450 acres for about $9.1 million. The farm approved by the state will include a massive milking parlor, several barns and the manure ponds and would use about 100 acres." Unless you have "inside info". The 10K is the cows on the farm in CA. Also working on the fringes of the dairy industry, I have heard nothing to positive things about the operation in Fair Oaks, IN. I don't personally agree with mega dairies, but for mega ones they do pretty decent. Do you just wish you had the captial to expand your own operation?(ie jealous much?) |

A well designed biogas system can address all of the environmental and public health concerns expressed by the opponents, while also generating a steady supply of electric and thermal energy.
"Digesters" have a bad name in this country, because inferior technology, bad design, or improper operation have led to failed systems. The implementation of the latest technology, together with solid design, proper construction, and competent operation (with knowledgeable guidance) are the ingredients for a successful project that can satisfy everybody's needs. i do not have inside information only what we get from meetings locally and newspapers. the original plan was for 2 sites across the road from each other. however there were isssues with set backs so the second site was put on hold. to add a second site later is much easier and less restrictive .
read what stopthmegadairy.org site presents . also, find out why the state of california is becoming more concerned about pollution there. we need to prevent messing with our ground water BEFORE it becomes a prokblem we can not solve. |

Sorry about this .... my classical education leads me to question if anyone else has noticed that the dairyman's name, "Bos", is Greek for "cow"? Greek cowherders in ancient times would go to the meadows and yell "Hoh, bos!" to their beasts. And now, thousands of years later, some cows are still named "Bossie". Ain't book-larning great!

The people of Jo Daviess County have voted against this potential environmental disaster through their county board. The board voted NO.The community does not want it here.
AJ Bos has no respect for the vote of this community.Jim Sacia has no respect for the vote of this community. The State of Illinois has no respect for the votes of its own communities. Our vote means nothing to them.... Talk about taxation without representation!! |
