This is a note to David Henderson. My mother was Myrtle Henderson and Jubie was her cousin, I believe, I remember Mother visiting Jubie, late in his life but before he moved away from KY to be closer to his kids. Mother was very fond of Jubie. My sisters and I have more than a dozen prints and carvings that Jubie did. Mother's dad was Robert Walter Henderson and he died before mother was born. We must be 2nd or 3rd cousins. I am 65 years old. I would like to learn more about Jubie's family.

This is a note to David Henderson. My father was Robert Alton Henderson and Jubie was his cousin. I called Jubie in 1999 and we talked for a while about his remembrance of family history. He told me some about his early painting. I'll include what I wrote down about our telephone conversation.
"On February 7, 1999 Jubie Henderson was living with one of his twin sons (Joel) in Montgomery, AL. Jubie did a lot of early genealogy on the Henderson family and much of what the Robert Walter Henderson family started with was from Jubie. Jubie is an artist of renown, primarily birds. When asked about his grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Henderson, Jubie said that yes, he did remember Tom. He said that in Tom's old age he went around from place to place and lived with different people and they often didn't know where he was. Jubie recounted one time when Tom hitch-hiked to Detroit to see one of his boys (Ivy). Somewhere along the way to Detroit, Tom met up with a young boy who was hitch-hiking and together they went on to Detroit and found Ivy. Tom looked like an old, old man and he told someone that he was 99 years old. The boy told them that he was 8 or 9 years old and there was an article in the newspaper about the oldest and youngest hitchhikers. Jubie told that the first art work that he did was an Indian tepee with a holder for the papose leaning against the tepee. Jubie's teacher kept that piece of artwork at the school for many years. Jubie had rheumatic fever on two different occasions. One time he was in bed for almost three years with it. A second time, while in bed with rheumatic fever, he became bored and he decided that he wanted to do some painting. He didn't have any small brushes, but he did have a collie dog. He cut some hair from the dog and made a brush from the dog hair. He said it made a great brush and he made several more that way before he bought brushes for his artwork. Jubie said that he recalled that his uncle, Robert Walter, was quite nervous for several days before his death." |

From Jacqueline (Jackie) Henderson's Daughter
Uncle Jubie was my grandfather's brother. G. G. Henderson was my grandfather, and his eldest daughter was my mother Jacqueline May. Hanging in my bedroom are two signed prints from Uncle Jubie. She would talk about how he helped her pick out the frames for them. She was always so proud of him. I can remember making regular treks over to Fulton when we lived in Hickman, going over to visit your parents, and sitting on the bed talking to your dad while he was bed ridden. Sending you my best wishes from your distant cousin - Terrie Virginia. |

Terrie, I just saw your message and am pleased to hear from you.Jackie and Jeannie were our buddies when we were little and I miss them. I did talk with Jeannie a few weeks ago and that was the first time since the family moved to Texas. If you are ever in the Memphis area I'd love to meet you. We live in Olive Branch, Ms just a short distance from Memphis. |

Mr. Jubie and Miss Edith were the sweetest people. Don't know if you remember me or not. My family lived around the corner from your parents on Arch Street. I use to go to Butt's Grocery and pick up their groceries in for them. I was given one of Mr. Jubie's prints for a HS graduation gift and it still hangs proudly in my home. I always loved an original he had hanging in his bedroom...had pink dogwoods, but he told me he never had a print made of it. I remember a tiny pheasant carving in a pill bottle too. He was a talented and sweet man. Nice to find this site. I live in the Fulgham area now.

I am so sorry it has taken me such a long time to get back with you. I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. I have talked to many whom were raised in the area who told me of all his wonderful paintings and how the neighborhood kids loved him. I am thinking of finding what all I have to do to make it a historical place in honor of Mr. Jubie.
