Blame=Michigan (Bo) Ohio State (Woody)
Notre Dame started to slide back in 1969 when they made a hand shake deal with Michigan. Purdue and Michigan State-Big Ten-are a lock to play against ND ever year. So who got bumped? Northwestern-Big Ten-was thrown under the bus to make room for Michigan. This resulted in ND ending their casual series with the NW Wildcats based in Evanston, Illinois aka Chicago, and had an effect on their Chicago recruiting base. For some reason ND stopped loading up on talent from Ohio and Pennsylvania too.
Notre Dame and Purdue usually opened against each other to begin the year, or played the second game of the season. Then Michigan came along to play Notre Dame, and Purdue was pushed deeper into the Notre Dame schedule. Oh by the way, Notre Dame is scheduled to open their 2010 season at home against Purdue.
Part of ND’s agreement with Meechigan was both schools would open their season against each other. Notre Dame voided the deal when Michigan was mauling the Fighting Irish, so Notre Dame decided they needed a tune up game before they faced the Wolverines.
