oh brother. why not pass out needles too, and do a needle exchange program. of course the 'altruists' are young, stupid, and living with mommy and daddy. Only when they grow up, move out, pay taxes, will they realize that ...if you feed them, they will come...ie, if you give hand outs to the homeless, like pigeons, they won't be motivated to do for themselves.
But these kids are young, dependent upon mommy, and too stupid to get this fact yet.
Santa Monica, CA...many years ago, and for years, had a homeless feeding on the steps of city hall every frickin' day. Also around city hall were constant muggings, thefts, burglaries, and the last straw...a murder of an old lady..whic prompted the city attorney and the homeowning populous to put an end to the magnet draw of homeless vis a vis crime.
Fort Lauderdale already has shelters to feed, house, bathe the homeless. If these naieve altruists wish to feed the homeless, let them open their mommy's house and do a soup kitchen in their living room, thereby adversely affecting only their home environment. Alternatively, the altruists-still-living-off-mom my, if they need a do-gooder goodwill gesture, they can feed the pigeons in a public park. That might be easier for them to handle.

ps...unheated, unrefrigerated food being fed to the 'altruists.' Well, give it about a week before one of the 'homeless' cries FOOL POISONING, sues the 'altruists.' to milk the hell outta them, taking their lunch money. Then...the 'altruists' will learn the hard way that you have to think before you act blindly...that the true population of homeless in these public feeding frenzies in ft.laud are addicts looking for a hand out and willing to scam even the hand that feeds them.

J.H.C ( Jesus.H. Christ) When I lived in FT.Lauderdale things got pretty bad for me at one point and I ended up "homeless". It's a whole long story but I was released from the FT.Laud jail after being held for 4 days for drinking a 16oz Budwieser in front of that 7-11 across from the "Auto (or maybe Toy) super store on Sunrise.(Open Container) The jail put me up for four days and then after some judge wanted to give me 15 additional day a "Public defender" got me out.
I walk out of the Jail at about 6pm. I had about $6.50 on me (My bail was $25). I got a pack of smokes and a bus ticket to Ft, Laud by the sea. My old stomping groud.
My boss at the time (at a popular restuarant) wouldn't take me back and told me to go pound sand. I didn't know what to do. She (My boss) suggested I go look for local programs that help the homeless. I went to The FT.Laud P.D station and the desk guy totaly helped me. Yes the Police do help people who ask for it. 30 minutes after asking the cop I met with a case worker That wonderful officer, I wish I could remember his name. Directed me to "Faith Farm". This place is awesome, it's an assest to your communitty. I got sober and study the bible..well I kinda study it..more like HMMM, Bible class= food I get it.
I left (Faith Farm) before my time was up I had saved some money. You do jobs there fixing up old furniture or appliance's that are donated by the public. In turn you get a weekly salary of like $6 free, food, haircuts, clothes, room & board, how to make resume' ect. Yes your with 45 other guys on a cot but ddaamm would you rather be on the streets?
MY point is Ft.Lauderdale has a ton of programs to help the homeless who want to help themselves. Do you think I got lucky, hearing about "Faith Farm" first. Research "The Hack" or "The homeless voice" or "times FT. Lauderdales pro homeless drive svaed my life years ago.
I Now live in Japan I'm married and pretty much sober, I drink sometime's and a run a srting of english language conversation schools.
In conclusion there is no reason to be homeless in S.Florida...Just give up Drugs and booze and the red carpet will rol down at your feet.

These "altruists" did the "dumpster dive" for the homeless, so there would be lukewarm food? Since the vast majority of the homeless in Fort Lauderdale live on the streets because they can't drink alcohol, or do drugs in any of the numerous assistance programs, and shelters, the least they could do is dive for their own dinner. When these kids grow up and face the real world, they will understand handouts are never appreciated, but a hand up builds a better world. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

And who says young adults have no clue about what's important in life? These people are very much deserving of the media's attention. Far more so than the childish antics of hotel heiress's, the ungrateful offspring of the music industried finest, etc. This group, Food Not Bombs, and other groups like them who work in positive ways to help others is what we ought read and hear about.
I knew a man who would be extremely proud of these young adults. Heck, it woundn't be a surprise if he lended a hand to them in some way. Unfortuantely he passed away recently: Bernie Alicki.
Thanks Food Not Bombs. You impact positively more people in the community than the Homeless.

You need help. But don't worry. There are programs out there to help people like you also. I pray that you never find yourself homeless and in need of the kind of help these people are giving.

The police did threaten to arrest these people after being told to do so by their superiors. When the newspapers got involved, the city denied making threats to arrest anyone.
This is how the city manager and his (joke of a)Director of Public Safety operate. When caught, they lie. This administration has absolutely no integrity. Wake up mayor and comissioners, fire this group before it is to late.

That's a real nice story. Most of these people have broken spirits and if this provides a little hope for them, then it's a great thing. It's nice to read about young people helping a situation as opposed to the gang bangers. Good job kids.

Food not Bombs: Don't let these negative people impact what you're doing ... The world is full of evil and "they know not what they do." They have their own serious problems, and our sole emotion towards them (and the police) should be compassion and some prayer. I'm proud to know anyone who does what Christ would do ... and you're doing it. Continue in his name and you will overcome all these "grown-ups" that can take a lesson from you "kids." GOD BLESS YOUR WORK!

The "do-gooders" would do much better if they channeled their resources to help the indigent obtain jobs, so that they could feed themselves (what a novel idea). Instead, the "do-gooders" abuse a public park at the expense of the city, so that they can have their moment of "feel good" while doing very little to solve the problem. Hmm.

That is so horrific. Period. Why would anyone dive into dumpsters and give that contaminated food to other people? The City needs to investigate the health ramifications.

Most homeless in the FTL CHOOSE to be homeless. As per Mr. Sparkle (above) there are many assistance programs and shelters in Ft. Laud that can get you on your feet. But you can't drink or smoke (crack) while in them. If you actually WANT to get out of the gutter you will.

These people choose not to work, to drink 24/7 and be a drain on society. These hippies are not fixing any problem or really helping at all. It's a band-aid on a gun shot wound.

I feel like acts like this are done only for self gratification purposes. They love patting themselves on the back thinking they've done this wonderful thing, when really you haven't helped anyone significantly; only prolonged the homeless problem b/c now they know they can be homeless and still get free food (what's the point in working?).
