Janet Fardette: To take back downtown, support downtown

Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

I just want to say ... I have just had the most interesting two weeks. First, I ranted to the Sentinel about frustrations with downtown Santa Cruz and "undesirable transient elements" down there.

It's all just talk..

The reason other downs don't deal with it is they don't put up with it. You think ANY of the BS behavior we see from these filthy animals downtown would be out up with for ONE second in Los Gatos, Carmel, etc.

The cops need to do their job and enforce EVERY little law on the books EVERY time. There need to be new laws made. Make it so damed uncomfortable to be a "homeless by choice" Santa Cruz transient that they LEAVE! WHY is panhandling allowed? Even in limited places? MORE BS liberal crap.

It's a joke. Santa Cruz is known among the homeless by choice crowd as a "friendly" place to be.

Tell Becky, HUFF and that idiot Robert Norse to buy a giant tour bus, get on it and take all their "associates" with them.

We live in Aptos. Santa Cruz was never even in our sites when buying a home in the area. Why, because of the scumbag problem. I ONLY spend money in SC when I can ABSOLUTELY not get that item anywhere else around. Even then, it makes me sick that even a penny of my sales tax goes to the most inept government.

The best thing written in the article above is:

"Just say no!" Do not give panhandlers money and move on down the street. If you "feed them with money, they will come."

That is the truth. Don't yell at the panhandlers. They are just trained monkeys with a tin cup. You'd keep coming back if someone kept filling your till. It always amazes me to see people handing BILLS over to these perfectly able body 19 year old beggars. THEY are the ones that need a lesson.

Janet, please don't fall for the polititians lip service, because that is all it is. The mall has essentially been the same since the 70's and those of us who have paid attention know the politicians that are running Santa Cruz are not doing anything meaningful to change downtown.

Sorry for the reality check,,,,,

Janet- it is everybody's downtown to share, not just yours to shape into a shopping experience outside of your small world living in Aptos

Pretty full of your self to get TWO "opinions" in the same paper in 4 weeks

I just came from downtown 5 minutes ago and let me share my experience with you. A nice young Black man decided he didn't like the fact that the police talked to him like they do to all transients in Santa Cruz so he waited for them to leave and then he decided to dramatically express himself to the other visitors to the downtown area. He did this by taking a guitar(which I imagine to be his) and breaking it into smaller pieces on the curb all the while shouting F U Santa Cruz multiple times. He then did the usual 'you are all a bunch of racists' diatribe to assorted visitors to our beautiful cosmopolitan diverse downtown area that is probably standard for his rant and rave sessions in public. Yes it was quite a sight especially for the stunned mother walking her kids past him of course downtown doesn't just have one freak show we have many like the guy in the wheelchair drunk and babbling about hard times as he spit on the sidewalk and asking for money in the same breath. Classy! Then there were the other transient/homeless by choice/ pseudo alternative types(without any style I might add) smoking and saying F this F that F U as if they had taken a college minor in ways to use the F word for the appreciation of others to follow along and gasp about our 'Keep Santa Cruz Weird' theology. I can't weait to go back and bring my impressionable niece especially after seeing the quizzical look of those two kids being shielded by their mother from the man who was practicing his guitar deconstruction therapy. I can see why other towns are jealous of Santa Cruz...I really can...really I can

Janet,

don't believe a word they say since they will talk your ear off but accomplish nothing then say 'but we tried'. The council is intolerant of the voters and see complaints as meaningless as long as they aren't discussed publicly. Wait two months then go back to downtown and see if anything has changed for the better. It won't since the city leaders are just trying to bamboozle you

You all just don't get it. What lack of human compassion you have. I live downtown. I see all that you express. I have a young daughter. She sees it too.

We don't judge. We have compassion. We think outside of the box and think "how can we help solve this problem in a proactive way."

You think pushing them out is best? Some other place can deal with it?

That is sad. Please, for the sake of Santa Cruz go somewhere else. Carmel or Monterey may satisfy your shallowness.

Compassion means not enabling addicts to continue their addictive lifestyles in a way which inconveniences them the least.
Compassion means not allowing a lazy 20-something to use a cat as a prop to get more spending cash.
How about 'compassion' for those of us who work for a living and deal with stolen bikes, broken in houses and dodging whacked out addicts who dash into the street for no particular reason?

Stephanie, it sounds as if you have enough compassion for both of us, so I'll just pass on the compassion b.s.
