Mass. sick leave bill gains momentum - Sentinel & Enterprise

Full story: Sentinel & Enterprise

As public health officials caution workers with flu symptoms to steer clear of the office, a new report shows that as many as 1.4 million Bay State workers, including many who can't afford to give up a day's pay, don't have any paid sick days.

This bill would be crippling for small businesses. We have 50 employees, estimated average wage $15.00/hr, 7 sick days per year, comes out to $42,000.00 per year, not including benefits. Ask Ms. Flanagan where this money will come from. Out of touch.

Too bad! People do get sick you know, Oh have you forgotten that? Apparently you are the owner of the business so when your sick it's not a problem you just stay home right but if your employees get sick he/she has to come in or he will not be paid or better yet be disciplined for disrupting the work flow ...and one more to top that one, GET EVERYONE ELSE SICK! We are not robots we are human beings.

Who in thier right mind would start a business in Masssachusetts when it is becoming clearer by the day that an anti-business left-wing ideologue now has it's hand on the tiller.

We can expect an endless number of Liberal initiatives that will make this state an unwelcome environment for business in the years to come. Demonizing businessmen is not the way to encourage investment and hiring.
Will Democrats continue the auto de fe? Will free enterprise continue to suffer attack after attack politically, legally, and rhetorically? Who will suffer in the end? The rich will hide their money. Companies will relocate.

The ones who will truly suffer in the end will be the workers who will be stuck in an economy that will mimic the sclerosis that set back European nations that followed many of the same policies that the Democratic leadership apparently desire. Ironically, those nations have realized the errors of their ways and are trying to undo the same type of policies Liberal's are promoting. They are finding it hard to dig themselves out of the hole -- as will we in the years to come.

As one poster recently put it,"
2 rider mowers $4000.00
1 leaf blower $150.00
1 chain saw $300.00
taxes $0

I just love my truck! Thank you New Hampshire..."

Another glaring example of the bums in the legislature giving business owners an incentive to close or relocate to a business-friendly state.

If this causes more layoffs, then it's a very bad idea. You can't get sick days unless you have a job. That's the real bottom line.

Is Massachusetts the "bill" state? Every other article in the paper is about the state trying to pass another bill.

We live in a society that values money over people. If they get sick, so what? Come to work anyway and spread it around. If you die, so what? They'll just replace you. All businesses care about is the bottom line.

Businesses have to care about the bottom line. If a company is losing money, they won't be in business long and jobs will be lost. Most businesses do not have the deep pockets that many people think they have. And it's getting tougher and tougher to turn a profit in this anti-business state.

I'm not a business owner and I've ben out sick 5 times in 35 years, Sally.

But for the real estate bust, many would already be long gone from this prison state (Taxachusetts.) Three speakers indicted on ethics charges superseded by tax increases on everything, which would occur even if this state was flooded with money. Why? Because the bulk of legislation is to curb what they perceive is personal social issues. The highest cigarette tax in the country, high alcohol beverage taxes, high restaurant taxes, gasoline and candy are the two newest in consideration. Since the last three Republican governors taxes in MA on business and personal has skyrocketed and service has all but failed. Worst is the one party control system which has made poor regions poorer to support the frivolous demands of Boston elitists. It was the industrial might in these poorer regions that created the wealth in Commonwealth, it is the financial centers in Boston that fritter it away. The high taxes and high cost of taxes and regulations is driving even the most lucrative businesses to flee the state and as the businesses go, so does the wealthy productive population.

How's all that "hope and Change" and "yes we can" working out for us now?

So you've been lucky, and blessed with good health. Two questions: How many times have you gone into work feeling like s h i t and sharing your sickness with everyone else? Were you paid for those 5 days?

<Businesses have to care about the bottom line. If a company is losing money, they won't be in business long and jobs will be lost.>

So, basically, what you're saying is, why bother being a good employee? If you get sick,( even if you can produce a doctor's note saying that you were under an MD's care), without sick pay, you lose a day's pay. If it's more serious, you could wind up losing your job.
Funny, I thought the employees were the ones keeping the businesses going? Nice to know that our health, our welfare and that of our families means nothing.
That's why we NEED health care that is not tied to our jobs.

Liberals don't ever want to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for their lives or health, they just want another handout from the state. Time for more businesses to relocate elsewhere. No wonder this state is in a huge budget shortfall.

Aquarius

You may feel mildly agitated as the sensitive Moon clashes with your life-ruler. Personal difficulties with family members or necessary home repairs may disrupt your day. Deal directly with problems no matter how much you would rather procrastinate. What you avoid today is likely to escalate into a much bigger problem for you to solve tomorrow.
