_-_Nope_-_ wrote: Actually, I'm not aware of his view. What DOES he say his opinion is? I have wondered that! Thanks, BM!! Not an exact quote, but close enough: "No matter how much I have to spend, Somerset will never sell alcohol as long as I draw breath." ...or something to that effect. From a prior wet/dry election, I think the "moist" one held at the same time as Burnside's original vote. 2001? Remember, his brother runs the big bank out of Stanford, and they defeated it up there with $$$$$$$$ back right after Lancaster went wet. What did Stanford do after that to balance the books? Forcibly annex a bunch of homes for more tax dollars. What has Girdler talked about for a while now? Forcibly annexing 10,000 people out Slate Branch and up the west side of 914. The city is going to get more tax dollars one way or another.

I don't think there is any rational for gas prices anymore. In DC it went down and in VA it went up! The stations sit on opposites sides of the Interstate.

them gas companys and stations do as they please to tease the general public and play with us like a cat plays with a mouse because the laws let them do it. buying gas is like playing russian rolette. we are at the mercy of gasoline merchants and they are haveing no mercy with us with price juggleing. since gas makes this country function...our economy is foundering because of the domestic terrorists who gouge and overcharge us with high gas prices.

Lets remember that it is NOT the oil companies that set gas prices. However, local "distributors" seem to have an overly strong influence over gas prices. Atleast in Somerset. Not saying the situation in Somerset is isolated but, it certainly seems to manifest itself more here. A privately owned store/station shouldn't be receiving phone calls from anyone telling them what price to put on THEIR gas.

Obviously none of you have ever worked for any of the local gas stations. Speedway is not locally owned therefore all of their orders come from the corporate office in Enon, Ohio. They are told when to raise, lower, and hold without even a minutes notice. As far as the over the phone thing I was told it was a corporate policy, not only can they not release Gas Prices, but they may not release any prices located in the business. They also are not permitted to release lottery numbers over the phone. All of this is due to liability issues. If they told you a certain gas price over the phone and you showed up and it had changed, you could call them a liar...therefore it's safer for the employees to not give any information over the phone. And whether you boycott Speedway or not it is not going to hurt them, or the business. They have too many loyal customers and accounts to keep them running for many years to come, so when you tell them they are losing your business you're definitely wasting your time and your breath because they don't care.

Bronston Man wrote: Hey, I gotta give it to Somerset. Something or someone is driving the price down. It's lower here than anywhere seems. Might we see < $3? Probably stay low until June 26th, then skyrocket 50 cents afterward. Pissed off people spending too much for gas are more likely to vote for change, and we all know the gas man's feelings concerning the sale of alcohol in Somerset. I'm glad to see someone else thinks the same!!! I expressed that sentiment when the gas started going down a couple of weeks ago. It'll be back to gouging as usual after today. Watch and see. Luckily there is a tropical storm down South to 'justify' it.

A privately owned store/station shouldn't be receiving phone calls from anyone telling them what price to put on THEIR gas. They have no control over the gas prices...they only control what prices are on the items inside the store. It's like owning your own store and selling apple computers...they are going to tell you what the price is and you go by that. Same thing with being a franchisee of a Burger King. You buy everything from them and they tell you what prices they want for your location. You can increase slightly on combos and some items but things that they advertise nationally corporate controls. So yes the gas company can and does tell the store owner what the price is.

I have worked for 2 different gas stations in Somerset. They actually do not make much money on their gas and at times they sell it for cheaper than they bought it for. Speedway goes by what their main office tells them to. I also worked for a locally owned BP station and the owner based his price on what the other stores in the area were selling it for. These stores also do not set the prices for the products in the store, it is set by ht hackney, coke, pepsi or which ever distributor that they get them from. The only ones that set their prices are the ones that go to walmart or save-a-lot to buy their stuff and resell it. Places like Speedway set their gas prices based on what the main office gets from the price of oil they buy to make the gas. (I worked at the corporate office in Ohio too.)

As a former owner of a station I must say mine was a little different than what you said here. I was able to set prices for most everything in the store that I wanted to except for times when my suppliers were wanting to promote an item. Then I got rebates based on how much I sold. But for the most part I set what I wanted. I did take into account what other stations were charging but I still could set it where I wanted it. For example drink prices from the fountain machine. I went with Coke and Pepsi. I got rebates from both based on how much I sold during a time period. With Coke it was quarterly but Pepsi was a little over a month at a time. So I could sell for less and hope that I got enough people in that it would pay off in the long run...which I did. The gas, again for me, was a set price that I had to go with. You are correct that at times I would lose on the price per tank because I had purchased it for more than I was selling per gallon but at the same time there were many times (especially on big jumps) when I made several cents on the gallon due to a big jump in price.

If it is a company owned station and they just lease it then normallt the company sets the price of gas. Everything else is up the individual leasing the store/station.

I tried to get a gas price over the phone with speedway as well and was told "we cant give you that information over the phone its not aloud" Why? All i can think is they want you to haul your bum down there to find out yourself and seeing as your already there and wasted the gas to check you may as well buy it... or because they don't want people calling and stopping by 20 mins later only to find they jacked up the price by another 20-30cents. Either way its a bunch of BS.
