I grew up at Oil Center. It was not a bad place then, nor is it now. Just because it was the scene of a murder does not make it bad! I guess if someone gets killed at Wal-Mart it will be labeled a "bad place!"

God's fury has been unleashed on this community. I'm afraid there's nothing in this town's future but doom and destruction. But God knows it's for your own good. This is totally ridiculous and off topic! We are not even wet yet! Besides, AGAIN, there was no mention of Alcohol being involved. It appears that everything listed in the paper now will be attributed to alcohol and the wrath of God. Where was the outrage when they arrested 3 people out there for making Meth? I guess that was OK with you folks. Since we are off topic, I might as well say that I think it's pathetic that the dry forces have the children and teenagers whipped into almost hysterics about the fact they are all going to die. I've read various posts and heard kids freaking out that they are going to die in a drunk driving accident and having to sit and watch their entire class of friends die. WTH? That is just wrong. And people are considering quitting their jobs (or being pressured to) because they will now have to run a case of beer across the scanner to ring it up? Yet it's perfectly fine now to work and ring up groceries on a Sunday. Please get a grip and realize Opie has grown up and has grandchildren of his own. Everything is in HD, not black & white anymore. Living in Fear is not really living.

Not sure of the year in the 90'3, there was a murder there that involved a van that both the city and the county responded to, Both units seen the van going north on 27, but neither Agency attempted a traffic stop. Hence, the person made a clean get-a-way and it was quite a while before he was caught. Was there also a pickup truck fire that had a body found inside?

Well said! Very sad wrote: Yes, a tragedy but it's even more of a tragedy that the people who live in this area can't feel safe going down there to enjoy the scenic beauty, natural swimming spots and trails for horse riding or walking because of this kind of behavior and the low lifes who hang out there. I mean no disrespect but it's an isolated, but still accessible, part of the county and it's on state/federal land that should be available to all. But it's been hijacked by drug deals, low lifes and deadbeats who trash the place and make it unsafe for any decent respectful people. Not a safe place at night or during the day. How about some of our county sheriffs down there?

It’s my understanding that the land is public use land (for hiking, camping, fishing). So who would patrol the area? Ky. Fish & Wildlife Officers, local Sheriff & the Deputies, Drug Task Force, Ky. State Police?

The sheriff's office does patrol the area as much as possible. The problem is the area is very isolated in a very large county. Just day(s) prior sheriff deputies arrested three people on two seperate occasions from the immediate area of the shooting. I agree to all who are from or has ties to the Oil Center area that more needs to be done from the authorities. I can assure all that I will do my part to help make this area more safe.

I hope the Sheriff and Deputies will step up patrols of that area. It seems that Fish & Wildlife Patrol would also be welcomed to assist in cleaning up the trouble makers and to help make it a safer place for the law abiding puplic to use. It's a shame that you wouldn't feel safe enough to camp there with your family. I really do hope the good people of that area are able to reclaim the area for the intended public use. Good luck. What about the traffic air patrol Somerset has now? That could truly aid the officers in cleaning up the area.

I live in the oil center area! I took my boys down there a few weeks ago to swim, but of course there was nowhere to swim! Because of the drugs, slobbering drunks, and idiots that was there!! Its a damn shame you have to carry a pistol to even feel safe down there with your family, but that's the way it is just about anywhere anymore!!! All this preaching about alcohol for months now! What about the big problem in this county! DRUGS!!!! That's what has taken over oil center and the rest of the county!!!

Soon it will be election time again, let's make oil center an issue. Make the sheriff and country judge clean it up. They know who's who's down there. Fish and Game ,country cops need to GROW A SET and run out the trouble makers. And not just close it to everyone, All good, working, taxe paying, voting, citizens should be able to take their children and elderly parents there to enjoy this great natural outdoor setting, without druggies, drunks and around low lifes. All we asking is for you to do your job. This don't mean fine the man who pulls off the side of the road so his kids can wade in the creek. It mean run off or arrest the drunks and dopeheads If you need help telling who they are ,find a new job.

Oil Center has been getting a bit of a bad rap. Yea there have been a few murders out there but still, overall its safe. Apparently the 2 knew each other and its not like some guy wondered up to his camp and shot him. I wouldn't feel safe out there camping without a gun. But its a wild area and even if it didn't have this bad rap I probably would take a gun just to defend myself. And by the way, there have always been people who drink camp out there. There may be a few druggies out there but you guys are acting like its a frigging slum in downtown New York 1970's where they shoot up in the middle of the street and bullets whiz by your head. Get real, its not that bad. I assure you, you can still take your kids down there and let them enjoy the day. Just don't be stupid and make sure to keep a little space between you and whoever else is there.

Is it DaGasssMan or the DumAssMan? One murder is one to many ,one druggie is one to many! OiL Center is not in the middle of the jungle it is just 2.5 miles from city limts. So are you saying it is o.k. to take your childern swimming next to someone making meth? Yes it is that bad there. I don't want my kids trying to play next to people drinking ,cussing and smoking dope. Most parents are funny that way. Get real!

Well I live less than a mile from oil center! Have property that adjoins it! I ride horses through there and try to go down there and swim! Its kinda hard to find a place where u can enjoy yourself without a drughead,or drunk showing up! Given they're alot of good people there also, and the ones I talk to say the same thing! Oh well to each their own we all have an opinion about it! In a few years it wont matter anyway cause the lake will be backed up and most of oil center will be back under water again!!!!

I think the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Make phone calls and encourage your friends & neighbors to call about cleaning up that area. There is nothing unreasonable about requiring your elected officials and their employees to do the job they willingly accepted. Our tax dollars fund all the Law Enforcement Agencies mentioned.
