This is not a big deal. Charging for shopping bags is the norm in Europe, where Ikea is based and they are just standardizing the practice throughout their stores. I doubt it will cut bag use by much, but it will make them another nickel a bag.

This is all about conservation. You can talk to an American all you want about conservation and they will nod their head and say they understand but then grab 10 paper napkins from a fast food joint, use 2, then throw the rest away since they are "free". Americans understand one thing, money. So to make any real statement about conservation you need to back it up with the almighty dollar. Charge 5 cents for a bag and they see the value in that bag. Make the bag free and there is no value so waste is justified. It's funny how that works.

Your argument is flawed. I doubt there is mass wastage of napkins throughout the restaurant industry as you're suggesting. Furthermore, these items, just like condiments, are already factored into the cost of a greasy hamburger. Ikea could have raised prices or charged for bags. Either way, it is a cost. Nothing is free! In Europe, you're lucky to get ONE napkin, and then you have to ask for it because they are kept behind the counter. Many people recycle plastic bags at home and use them for other purposes. I think you're overreacting.

Thank you for your education in Europe, Half of my family lives there so I know how things work. I also know that Ikea is promoting conservation and the money charged for the bags will be donated to American Forests, a conservation group. Ikea is aiming to reduce the number of bags used (curently 70 million/year in the US) and also raise about $7 million for American Forests. So before you go spouting off that I'm overreacting (which I believe you meant exaggerating??)you should do a little research.

If you are all worried about plastic bags then why don't you choose to purchase a bag that you can use hundreds of times? www.bettercontainers.com carries one of the only patents for a shopping bag that clips into your cart. Check it out.
