I would definitely welcome tornado sirens for all the cities and smallest towns in the area. I was very fortunate to live through a direct hit tornado in Indiana while I visited my uncle there years ago, so I always take storms very seriously. Some people joke that The Weather Channel must be my favorite television station.

My mother gave me a NOAA weather radio, but I still think the sirens would be of great benefit. This past week, for instance, when NOAA said "Smyrna is now coming under-the-gun," the part of Smyrna in which I live had experienced the worst of the storm ten minutes prior to that announcement. In these storms, seconds count, and minutes can mean death.

I was raised in Oklahoma, so I know exactly what a tornado can do. As far as the sirens, back when I was in Ok, some of the sirens didn't turn on until it was almost too late. I am sure they have updated the system.

I have lived in Smyrna for four years, and each year i hope that sirens go up. I have noticed a pattern with storms and they are not being to nice to us and I think sirens will just make me feel a little safer when I go to bed at night.

Does the eastern part of TN have tornados that come through the mountains? Please dear GOd tell me they don't or I may have to rethink my move! There were way too many tornados in the Shreveport, Louisiana area (where I'm from)... I cannot handle bad weather. I'm all for sirens or anything that can warn people.

I believe the mountains are too high for the tornados. I know it sounds strange but I think that the level of the ground has to be low for a tornado to hit.

The ground doesn't have to be flat for a tornado. I am from western Maryland and in 1998 there was a tornado that went thru Frostburg, MD and thru parts of WV. All very mountainous areas. Not a place you would expect a F-5 to go thru but it did. I think it is a rare thing but it does happen.

Found a few websites that tell of the tornado. I also must correct myself...it was a F-4. For some strange reason I remember them having it in the local paper back in '98 saying it was a F-5. Guess it was premature speculation right after the storm and down-graded at a later date.

sirens are good IF used properly

in my town we have one and the sound it more often than needed...before you say better safe than sorry....fact is if people think they do it all the time if there is just a watch out or whatever they won't heed it when something has been spotted headed right for you

Anyone know how much a Tornado shelter shelter might cost to be built on your property?
