Don't blame the town for driver error, that car was operating at a high rate of speed and at a time of night when alcohol may have added to his bad judgement. I feel for the family but not every tragedy is a payday. Move on.

"the car drove down the ramp during a rainstorm and into the Nissequogue River."

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the driver drove into the river killing himself and his friend. Don’t try to blame the town for someone else's stupidity. Since this happened in the early morning hours, it's a good chance that the driver was also drunk.
Only a moron can manage to drive into a river.

Everyone knows not to drive a car into water. Keep your grief out of the courtroom, lady. I'm sure your son was a "model citizen" being this happened in the early morning hours.

I'm also sick of hearing how some surviving family member "has pictures of him all over the house" as if that justifies the lawsuit. Newsday is obviously on the payroll of plaintiff attorneys here in Long Island.

That's right, make our taxes go up because of your son's inexperienced driving skills. I am sorry for your loss.

Yet another BS lawsuit turning the stupidity of the "victims" into a means to make a fortune off the town. Until we get laws that will backcharge the plaintiff for court costs and all expenses for frivolous lawsuits like this, we will continue to be plauged with nonsense like this.
a little compasion please

How can all of you people be so cruel? I don't think any of you know these families or what really happened. Is everyone in the world so angry about everything that they have to vent here and hurt other people. Don't be so quick to judge.

It was a terrible accident. It is a terrible thing to loose a child. Unless this type of incident is happening regulary at that location it was probably driver error. If that is the case, suing the government does not make any sense. In fact it looks like the family is trying to profit from their childs death. Too many lawyers feed on these situations. They are evil demons corrupting people in pain. I pray that this family is able to escape this influence and save their souls. God Help You.

Lesson:::

Don't drink and drive

these two were nice young men, but they did like to party. And that's a fact, not an opinion.

yes, a tragic accident, and I feel bad for the families. but get real---who's really at fault here????

How many years has that road been there???? how many accidents??????

People need to take responsibility for their own actions

My first reaction was also to blame the victim. But after reading the WHOLE article, about how other drivers have also had problems at this location, and that after this accident the town finally put signs and warning lights, I am inclined to agree with the families that the town was neglegent.

I have been to that boat ramp a dozen times and its quite hard not to notice your headed for the ramp you can see the island on the other side of the channel they definetly had to be going at a high rate of speed because you have enough time to stop if your going at the posted speed limit

This wasn't an accident. An accident is an unforseen event occurring. It isn't unforseen that if you are drinking, driving, speeding, that you will collide with something that will end your life. These two Darwin award winners got what they bargained for. A trip to the morgue by their own intentional acts.

I truly hope the families of those two young men are successful in their legal fight. It's just a shame that it won't bring them back.

They are 100% correct that, unless you know the area, it would be a very easy thing to do, especially on a stormy night, which was the case that early Saturday morning, and not being from the area.

Funny enough, a few days after the horrific accident (I witnessed the recovery efforts from my home) the quick thinking Smithtown board pulls a slick move and posts dead end signs (on the ramp itself no less, a little late if you are heading there at that point) and a yellow flashing light which so many people say, "oh great, now they will think some light ahead is turning red and race even faster to beat the light" a few days post the accident. Shame on you Smithtown Town Board, and with all my heart, I hope these families win their battle.

You're not a Smithtown resident, so your taxes would not go up.
