i lived in sligo pa and this is absurd. Tiny town politics at best. This shows that it is not what you know, but who you know. Was there a casting couch in the election room? How pathetic.

Jenny is 20 also and not yet 21. How old is Cassandra? Also Jenny was sworn in by a unanimous vote. The people of Sligo lover her and they all know her and not because it is a small town but because she says "hi" to everyone and is always friendly and she's willing to help others even if it means risking her neck. It doesn't matter who you know it's what you know. I heard Jenny speak at a meeting and she knows what she wants and she knows how she is going to obtain it. She's already got some things in the works to be able to build up the community.

Cassandra turned 21 on 11-25-08, but she is running unopposed on 5-19-09. She is a junior pre-law student and she is also a Legislative Assitant to the House of Representives, so she does know what she is doing and she is getting things done in our town. Also, our town is 5,955 people and she was also voted in unanimously by the council on 10-7-08. We are very proud of her and what she has and what she will accomplish during her time as Mayor.

Jenny does not turn 21 until 6-12-09. Jenny is starting community days back up in Sligo. This will be the first time in about 6 years that we have had this. She is also working with our fire dept. on the Irish fest and trying to make it one of the best. She's planning to redo some of the sidewalks in town because they are getting bad. She also has started working on a desplay case in the borough office to show off artifacts from 'back in the day'. She said that alot of people have forgotten what this town used to be and we have forgotten our heritage and she would like us to remember it.
Though Jenny is not a law student she has been involved with politics all of her life and her father was in politics since he got out of high school.
I think that Jenny's vision for the town is a good one and I can't wait to see what she does next.

Maria,
I do not know why you are making this some type of competition, I feel both girls are very accomplished and for their ages they are doing a great job to show what the youth of this great nation can do. I applaude Jenny for her ambition and also Cassandra. Both girls have different ideas and both are going to go very far in their lives. I do was not trying to down grade what Jenny has done, only to recoginze another young woman who is doing the same thing in politics.

I'm writing a piece about mayors under 30 in the United States. I'd be so grateful if you could you two tell me anything else about how Cassandra and Jenny are doing? Did you vote for them? Why or why not? Thanks!

This is the most corrupt borough in the State of Pennsylvania. They can afford to add a kitchen onto the rec center, overpay the boro secretary, pour money down the "drain" into the boro self operated sewer system (which should be sold), run off the previous mayor, not manage the 2 full time boro employees who suck out overtime from the boro, allow ATV's to run through town, not enforce ordinances, yet the council cannot find a way to provide even part-time police protection. They ought to be ashamed. The residents of Sligo need to wake up.

I think Jenny/Maria needs to read the Borough Mayors Handbook. She does not have the power or authority to make the changes that she wants to. Her only power is over the police force of which there is none unless "daddy" gets one for her. When a 20 year old female is elected to Sligo City Council that will be news.

I've not met her, but I've met a few people from Sligo. All of them were very snobbish and suspicious. Maybe the reason why is because there are seven (7) former residents of Sligo that live here in Columbus, because I and others helped them leave. When I told two of them that operation exodus was underway, they went looking for people that they thought I was after. they were very surprised that I already got them out. Their house was sold and the locals were very upset. They never expected that my most recent "conquest" as they call it was someone that they considered solid. All it took was 4 successive weeks of the Sunday edition of the Columbus Dispatch. They came here, got a job in just 2 days and were off and running. The thing that surprised them most was the high standard of living and the low cost of living. Here in Columbus, we're still growing, we're still hiring, and we're still doing good. We are in a recession, but you wouldn't really know it. Come to Columbus. You'll be glad you did.

First of all to you in Columbus, quit stealing our illiterate, uneducated, unemployed voters, we depend on them to keep our boro council in office. You are "officially banned from our town, we have just passed an ordinance (just hope we can enforce it). Also, there is no need for our Mayor to go to Disney World(her aspiration) she is already living in a Micky Mouse town.

Thanx Clem, I'll take it under advisement. Having said that why don't you come to Columbus and live here. The taxes are lower and so is the cost of living. The wages are higher and so is the standard of living. And we're hiring. And there is NO per-capita tax and there is also NO priveledge to work tax. You'll love it here. And yes, Columbus is the state capital and our politics is also a comedy of errors, just like Harrisburg.

Good luck Jenny.... here is some info on your closest competition for youngest female mayor from Beaver County. Erica Wachtel, 24 grew up in Baden, where her parents still reside, Erica is now a resident of Ambridge. A graduate of Ambridge Area High School she then received her Bachelor's Degree in Communications/Public Relations from Geneva College, located in Beaver Falls, and is currently obtaining a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School for Public and International Affairs.

After graduating from college in 2006 Erica worked as a Copy Coordinator for Berkey, Brendle, Sheline in Akron, Ohio. In 2007 she moved back to Beaver County and obtained the position of Store Manager at the Silk House Cafe in Ambridge and the Beaver County Courthouse. After the closing of the Ambridge location Erica then applied to and was accepted into Graduate School. Presently, she is employed as the Co-Director of the Ambridge Area Chamber of Commerce.

Along with actively attending council meetings, she is a member of multiple organizations and committees throughout Ambridge and the surrounding areas: Ambridge Planning Commission member, Ambridge Rotary member, Co-Director of the Ambridge Area Chamber of Commerce, Local Government Academy (www.localgovernmentacademy.org ) graduate, Citizen's Police Academy (www.beaverpa.us ) student, Committee to Clean and Beautify Ambridge member and an Ambridge Crime Watch member.

Being involved in these various groups has opened her eyes to the importance of the roles that the Mayor is responsible for. As the mayor of Ambridge, he/she is to oversee the operations of the Ambridge Police Department as well as being a public liaison for our community.

Erica, an avid runner (thus the story behind her slogan "The Candidate Who Runs For You"), is the oldest child of Brian and Chris (Hogan) Wachtel, and sister of Jarod Wachtel, currently a junior at Waynesburg University.

Here is her website. http://www.ericaformayor.vpweb.com/
Drop her a line on her contact page or at ericaformayor2009@gmail.com.

Listen, she has no clue whats going on in this hick boro. They let her cut a ribbon here or there and let her play on the computer. Her daddy uses her as a front and thats it. He is the council President and runs the backwards boro. They have no police because they dont want anyone looking into their business. Its a Democract boro and you could be hitler and they would vote for you if you had a (D) next to your name. They make Maybarry look like New York.

Wow I can not believe the results from the article about the youngest female mayors in PA. Cassandra is doing fine, she is running unopposed on 5-19-09 and she is doing quite well. She is having a fund raiser for a child that has a terminal brain tumor on 5-17-09 and she has already received a few thousand dollars for the cause. She is very involved with the town and she is a will be a senior at Kings College in the fall studing pre-law and politcal science. We are very proud of the this young woman at the age of 21 she is doing alot more than alot of us dream of.

You all are a bunch of haters. You don't even have any idea what you're talking about. Are any of you actually in this area NOW to see what she is doing? Just because she's young and her dad works for the borough doesn't mean she can't make wise informed decisions for the town. Obviously no one in Sligo is too worried about it.

I am in the area and I know what she does not have the power to do and the corrupt things her father has already done. The only "wise" decisions she can make are the ones she is told to make by the council. Her age has nothing to do with it. Her only experience is as snack bar manager at the pool and her aspiration is to be a disney character. I applaud the young mayors that I have read about on this site that are taking an active role in their community that however is not the case with Jenny. Since you are in Pittsburgh I don't see how you can possibly know what goes on in Sligo. And you are right no one in Sligo is worried about it, that is the problem.

Now I know why they are enlarging the kitchen at the rec center. Jenny is getting her own snack bar to manage courtesy of her father and the Sligo taxpayers.

Well being from the area of Sligo I can tell you this youngest Mayor is a Joke and a nutcase. She is collecting disability for depression and stress anxiety. Can you belive that! She wants to be in politics but can not handle the emotional rollercoaster of daily life, so the working citizens of Sligo are paying for her cigerettes and car!

Also she is a story teller, and can not remember which lie she told you, so you can always catch her on a lie after you have talked to her long enough!

To Maria her biggest fan: I have heard her speak, and it sounded like a teenager giving a speech, not a serious politician..Just as her apperance is a teenager not a serious politician. Sligo is in need of someone who is going to take charge, stop all the corrupt politics, and get this town back on the map as a great place to raise a family...Sorry Jenny you are not it!

If you have nto noticed she supports what her Daddy wants only! She is not capable of making her own decisions....She is still in bed when the decisions need to be made!

Hats off to all the young politicians tryign to make a difference, and have become a respectable person of their communities! Unfortunatly for us in Sligo, we are not there.

It's Christmas Eve and you're running around like a scalded cat. However, it will do you no end of good if you can find a few moments here and there for some quiet contemplation. You might want to visit a place that's sacred to you, or take a walk in some beautiful surroundings so you can commune with nature. You need to feel that you're connecting with something bigger than yourself.
