Dismissal of citations causes stir in Slatington

Full story: The Morning Call

Slatington officials spent months railing against a former lumber yard on Cherry Street co-owned by council's vice president, filing citation after citation calling the 19th-century building dilapidated, at risk of collapse and ''a public nuisance.'' Then, in a controversial move, council's president last month directed a borough lawyer to have the ...

With all the drug dealers on the main street of town and this is what council worries about. Kick them all off and get in somebody that cares about the town

Amazing story, even worse post on TOPIX.

Nice place you have there -- Very cute on the way in, too bad you have somehow let morons take over your leadership positions.

Is there justice in Pennsylvania? Hell no. We had an incident in Easton, dropped by the courts with a slap on the wrist, we had an incident in Philadelphia of voter intimidation by the ACORN group, thrown out with NO EXPLANATION, we have a commonwealth government that failed to do their job of getting a budget out on time, NO PUNISHMENT. Shall I go on?

When I first moved here I thought it was be nice and quiet- a change from Allentown. I take my dog and children for a walk- which happens to be at the property at discussion- and even the 3 yr old said "we can't go near that place because it is dangerous" and the older one finishes it by commenting on how ugly it is! And what is there to get on Main Street? If there weren't so many police in the Northern Lehigh area that didnt care- maybe more would be done! How sad is it when the police can't even recognize citizens and respond with a "hi" or anything. No wonder there were so many investigations on them mingling with prostitutes or whatever trash they were and being to lenient- they are all fresh out of the academy and think it is a fun game! How sad!

Large parts of Slatington are becoming a slum brought on by many factors including but not limited to section 8 housing. All the policing in the world won't solve that problem.

So it's amazing what happenes in small towns, there always seems to be more drama here than those bigger cities. I scratch my head everyday driving through town.

As you read here you have the President and Vice Presiddent of council owning property that is littered with junk. No wonder Zeigler's junk yard is still there too.

I wounder how Rentchler's likes slatington and the lack of action they did with Zeigler?

Even better yet, the councilman who is head of finance...if I remember correctly he had an auto part store that went bankrupt? Every single council person up there is there for their own personal agena, and they make it obvious they screw the town to get what they want.

In this article, don't you find it ironic that the lawyer, and the president cannot remember the date they talked about waiving the fines? I smell a rat.

You have all the stuff for the local cops, and what do they do? Nothing. you bring in all this HUD, and wounder why there's a crime problem. You get what you asked for. Main street looks like a dump. Are those National Historic flags on main street? How can you hang them with Main street looking like that Mr. Reed? Fix your run-down sh*tholes and maybe this place will shape up.

A lot needs to be done. I hope there is a big internal investigation of council and they solve the problems from within.

I am sure there will be plenty more stories like this one to come, I will be waiting.

This is how the abuse of our political system starts, and this is where we should seek to stop it. Reed was not ignorant of the law and the codes and he is not some poor person just hanging by a thread with little means. He should have contracted a professional demolition company in April. He had plenty of time and warning of the consequences.
Council president Freed has stepped beyond his bounds and miss used his position. He should be held accountable and perhaps should even step down. If he is dishonest however then he will not step down and indeed will not admit to any wrong doing.
We must insist on maintaining honesty in government at all levels so we don't end up with little crooks growing into big crooks inhabiting the highest offices in the land.

Slatington used to be a nice place, now all the bums are there. I think even the cops are afraid to do anything. Several years ago the cops would drive thru town and sit by the bank keeping an eye on things. Now I don't think I have seen but one cop car go down main street in the past five years. It's about time Slatington and Washington Twp make people clean things up. I guess it's all who you know, then you can get away with things.

Slatington is and always was a dump and this article shows the typical mentality of the inhabitants of this town lost in a garbage pile.

This is just another fine example of your elected officials, using their powers to better themselves, instead of the people they are supposed to represent.

The entire board should be fired and bring in temporary replacements until a new election can be held.

First order of business should be the police, going to this guys' house and arresting him for public endangerment!!

If you live in Slatington its because you either receive welfare, disablility, or child support and choose not to work and its the only place they can afford to live wihout having to work. Others who live there work the bare minimum and are ok with "just getting by". The people who live there don't care about their town and are showing their children great examples of how to be unproductive members of society. The town looks horrible, the school is a darn shame and the people who live there don't care, but want to complain...go figure!

Well, once again. The paper listens to only those who want their name in the paper "Kris Burek." I just don't understand how you listen to one side of a story and don't find out who the person truly is before you write a short novel on someone. Bryon Reed has done so much to save the Borough of Slatington so much money and also has been the one to get Grants give to the Borough of Slatington for many projects that needed to be done. Bryon was born and raised in Slatington, He truly cares about the town of Slatington and it's appearance too ! Bryon & his father have bought properties in Slatington and have fix these OLD Buildings on Main Street and turned them into Beautiful Apartments for those who choose to live in Slatington. But all good things take TIME ! Especially when you do all the work yourself. Bryon has too much on his plate! He
And his dad volunteer there time on Fairview Cemetery and all the up keep winter plowing & summer mowing, Bryon has cared for the cemetery since he is 13 years old with his dad (35 years).Yes we all mow our own yard, but try mowing 40 hours and weed wacking it all too! Before we speak about others we should truly learn something about the person we are try to smear their name through the mud. Put it this way, it surly don't make you look good as a reporter. One day if you really want an article to write that will get peoples attention write what GOOD PEOPLE DO AND DON'T GET NOTICED FOR!

Those of you living there need to hold a tea party meeting of your own to get things put right. Do it now. Do not let them walk all over you.
