Can be very dangerous on those narrow two line roads, driving on left side, many blind corners and areas throught the volcanic rock where there is no margin for error. I found it hard running down in Bermuda let alone on a scooter, Very sad for this family and my thoughts are with them.

what a horrible tragedy, made even more painful by the ignorant comments that some people have posted in response to the accident. black, white, rich, poor, suburb or inner city, NO ONE deserves to die so tragically at such a young age, and no 9 year old deserves to lose their mother.
i'm from kenilworth, and while i personally don't know this family, i know that the pain from this loss will be felt in the community for quite some time. i'm disgusted by the fact that some of the people posting feel that they're entitled to mock her death simply because she's a white female from the north shore. everyone needs to stop being so critical and hateful, look past income and neighborhoods and skin color, and simply recognize the fact that this woman died tragically and in pain, and she deserves to be mourned. rest in peace |

Her name is SUSAN Hoopes, not Martha Hoopes. Those of us in Kenilworth are and will be here to help this family in any way we can.

I am a witness to this accident. I was standing at the bus stop right in front of where it happened. She lost control. It was that simple. She just lost control. The real tradgedy is that it took 30 minites to get that baby out from under the truck. I can't get her cries out of my head. I hear her every time I close my eyes crying for her mommy. I see her mothers lifeless body laying in the street. I see the driver of the truck in complete shock. I see a father and son standing there helpless, and in shock. I see this little girl with her hand trapped under the tire and her body trapped under the engine of the truck. I see locals trying to help, wanting to lift the truck off this child, but told not to touch it, a man gently putting a pillow under Susans head and covering her body with a towel whispering something to her. She was alive briefly after the accident. She died while waiting for help to arrive. She just lost control.

They are a fabulous family and she was a warm, wonderful mother. Such a tragedy.

She went to High School with my sister here in Texas. Beautiful girl. Very sad news.

I knew Susan and she was a very sweet, religious and beautiful woman who was always smiling and loved her young children very much. Some people need to keep comments to themselves because this is a mother, wife, friend etc. you are talking about who's life was cut way to short. Have some class "Gary" and other ignorant individuls who can not see beyond their own shortcomings. It's none of your business to write such horrible things about someone you don't even know. Shame on you.

1 I can't even imagine her husband and son witnessing all of this tragedy before their eyes. My heart goes out to him and his loving children who have to endure the pain of losing such a loving mother, and a wonderful wife. May she rest in peace. |

My heart is absolutley broken for Susan's family. They have truly lost a treasure. I was one grade older than her and we were on the student council together. While I haven't seen her in 22 years, I still remember her very well. She was always one of the "good" girls. She was always smiling, very pretty and I NEVER heard her speak a bad word about anyone. I have and will continue to pray for her family because God is the ONLY one to be able to comfort them the way they need comforting right now.

I live in Bermuda and was deeply sadened to hear about this accident. I think about it daily as I drive by the scene of the accident on my way to and from work.
My heart and thoughts go out to the family and I pray the daughter is recovering well from her injuries. I can't imagine how the father, son and daughter are coping but I truly hope they are finding ways to continue and keep her memory alive. A real tragedy... |

I know ashley very well, and it just about broke my heart when i heard this. I had never heard Mrs.hoopes talk strickly or harshley. a very calm person. I talked to ashley once about and she said she hated lying in a puddle of blood, trapped under the van. I feel awful about it....

Holy smokes... what are you smoking? You really think the local drivers look out for tourists? The locals on their bikes will run you off the road in a mili-second. Driving in Bermuda is very dangerous... Simply because none of the driving laws are enforced. The speed limit is 22 mph throughout the island. But the locals drive at 40+ mph or more on a regular basis. People honk all the time time as a greeting to each other, which will make you jump out of your skin on a regular basis. So if your go there and rent a bike be prepared to Get used to to meaningless horn honking. This practice actually negates the reasons cars have horns (to get others attention to prevent an accident).... Honking your horn to prevent an accident is useless...Everyone just assumes you are greeting them!
The police don't enforce the rules... so no one abides by them... any of them. Speeding is standard practice. Passing on a curve is standard fare for local bikers...As is weaving in and out for traffic. I’ve even been passed by bikers on my left side. If you rent a bike there (and remember you can't rent a car. So to get round independently your only choice is to rent a bike) you had better be very careful. Because Driving in Bermuda is an “every man for himself” experience. There are rules on the books but since they are not enforced, everyone drives as if they simply don’t exist... It’s very scary for those of us who come from places where there are rules of the road... Bermuda is a beautiful place. But the sad state of the driving experience there means you could get maimed or killed. Be careful and Be warned! |
