Battle brewing over proposal to increase Wisconsin's beer tax

Full story: TwinCities.com

Wisconsin should raise its tax on beer for the first time in 40 years to fund programs that will help reverse the state's alarming rates of problem drinking, supporters told lawmakers Tuesday.

Maybe in addition to raising the tax, they should just close down three fourths of the bars in WI to help combat these problems.

La Crosse has 51,000 people ... and 200 taverns ... practically one on every corner. Plus, most bars there have an off-sale license so they can sell cash 'n carry. Some of those patrons have never seen daylight.

A 2 at 10, but a 10 at 2 is the only thing that gets you laid on a lazy Wednesday night, so you should love all those bars out there ...

I know, my brother and my dad live in Augusta. It is a very small town, and at least at one time there were no less than 3 bars on the main drag. I haven't been there for a while but I doubt any of them have closed, and for all I know there may be more by now. My brother knows a guy that lives there and this guy is only about a year older than my brother (mid-forties), and this guy is pretty much pickled. If they lit match near this guy the town would probably blow up.

Hey, PSD buddy ... nobody says folks can't be drunk all the time ... it's a free country.

My uncle owned a tavern in La Crosse and he had the same people show up when he opened at 7AM. Some of them stayed until closing at 2AM. They ate there. A few played cards once in a great while but most just sat around, nursing their drinks or beer. My uncle even cashed their checks for them (after paying their bar tabs, of course.

Our point was ... these people lived in a tavern, only going home to sleep and clean up. My uncle thought they were nuts but they paid the electric bill.

Not ugly, but this is your second comment to me, so one would have to wonder about you.

Testy, testy little cheddar heads.
When I do business in Wisconsin, I'll try to take care of it before 10am so they can join their drinking team in action without falling too far behind. When you cheer for the packers, it comes with the territory.

I still think that a small tax increase on beer, after 40 years, has got to be a winner for Wisconsin. Let's face it, who loves their beer more than cheddarheads? You can just smell the surplus.

How about taxing the hell out of plaid shorts......now that would hurt you. What are they going to do if no one smokes or drinks????? Then what will they tax? How about golf courses and golf clubs. I don't golf so it sounds good to me.

Never fear, smoking and drinking will go on into the next millenium. You have to admit many drinkers and smokers end up costing the rest of us a bunch in increased costs, generally health costs. Uninsured causing accidents that have to be paid for, seniors with health problems who were drinkers and smokers, etc etc.

But other than being annoying, what has a pair of plad shorts ever done to you, other than cause eye pollution???:)

You had better remember history. First they came for the bankers, you wern't a banker so you did nothing. Then they came for the teachers,You wern't a teacher so you said nothing. They came for all the others and you did nothing,So when they come for you no one will be around to do anything at all.
They will find a way to tax everything we know and love to the point it will destroy us all if we do not stand up to the tax collecter and tell them NO!NO!NO MORE!!

Sorry, little buddy, I don't wear them. We have to wear long pants in competition. As far as your lame argument about you paying all the taxes, I highly doubt it. Golf courses and clubs pay their fair share. We pay as much tax as anybody as players.
Well then

If that's the case then we should tax fast food at 50% and cell phone usage. Why not tax soft drinks that contain caffeine also? Oh and don't forget the farmers for providing the product to make corn syrup. As far as I'm concerned anyone 20 lbs over weight should have to pay double the tax to support health care. MN should have a clothing and food tax. Tax, tax, tax. The answer to everything.

So do smokers and drinkers, but they keep raising taxes on them. I don't smoke never have. I don't understand taxing the he11 out of something. Then when no one smokes/drinks, they will just find something else to tax. Like all the chemicals the golf clubs use out there. Lets tax the sh1t out of the chemicals and fertilizers used. Look what it's doing to the ground water. But wait then golfers will get mad. See I don't golf either!

Daily Horoscope for December 7

Leo

If there have been slight tensions or frictions between you and a loved one recently, this is the perfect day to get them out into the open, thrash them out and then forget about them. Things could get quite heated in the process but don't worry because they'll work out all right in the end. Put as much energy into kissing and making up as you did in arguing!
