Bears in that area are becoming nuisance wildlife, but they're more than just a nuisance- they can be dangerous and destructive. If the thing was in his yard, and he shot it, then what's the big deal? It's not like he went out hunting for it. The man was defending his property.

People in that area are becoming a nuisance, obviously to the wildlife in that community. It's people like you that move your family from the urban community to make what you consider a better place to live, only to slaughter and mold it into what you think is perfect. Pretty soon there will be no more wildlife and no more farmland after greedy people build their McMansions and fastfood restaurants where it used to be rolling hills and woods. Hopefully you will all just consume so much that you will all pop!

Are you from Yonkers? That is a city. What are you talking about anyway? These bears are getting pushy not that people should start shooting them but we did not hear the man who shot it side of the story maybe there were small children close. Who knows but if you don't live in that area than keep your comments to your self

First of all, did you notice he was ticketed for discharging a firearm illegally?

Second, the bear was wandering back into the woods. Geez, what a threat a retreating bear is.

Third, there are other ways of dealing with unwanted animals, or God forbid children, that wander onto your property besides KILLING THEM.

Bears are gay; no wonder that old dude shot it. I'd shoot a gay bear on my property too.

"Jaded", kindly shut up about that which you have made it more than clear you know NOTHING about. My family and I live in an almost 300-year old building in the area. We haven't done anything to alter the landscape unless you count my small flower garden. My neighbors have been seeing more and more bears in the last few years- one of them regularly has them up on his back porch!
Bears are very large wild animals. You probably don't know this though, coming from Yonkers and all. If one becomes agitated, they can be deadly. The fact that they are becoming less and less afraid of human-populated areas is NOT a good thing.
I stand by my previous statement. Good for this guy. If someone tries to break into your home, you have the right to shoot them; why is it a different story when it's a bear?

Yourmom,
The homeowner should have called animal control. Step outside of your little world for one second and realize that bears and other wildlife probably lose acres of their "home" to new development, etc. Of course bears are dangerous, but other steps can be taken other than killing.

I don't know the man's property, however I wouldn't want some 80 year old guy shooting any where near my house unless his life or the life of another person were in danger. The bear was leaving his property? Then let it go.

Yea-bears are becoming a nusence more & more but-if they are not harming anyone then you don't have the right to just shoot it. I think the old man shoudl have called animal comtrol to try and capture the bear..it certainly did not deserve to get killed exspecially when it was just looking for food and when the old man spotted the bear it was walking away not goign after him nor anyone else. Cruelty to animals is wrong when not necassary and I think what this old amn got so far for what he did is a good thing...lessoned learned and I hope to everyone else as well.

The fact is that wildlife is a natural part of life in that area. There has not been one bear attack in CT at this point. Any animal can be dangerous and when it is threatening someone then action must be taken. However, no one should fire a weapon in an area that is heavily populated. That is 100 times more dangerous then a retreating black bear. If you don't like wildlife in your yard then move somewhere else. Otherwise, get used to it. They are here to stay. How do you think people live in other parts of the country where Grizzly Bears and Mountain Lions live? Those animals are more dangerous than a black bear and have killed people. Somehow people survive and live with it. I don't think they freak out over it walking in their yard. There is a lot more to worry about in this world then a Black Bear.

look if you weren't there you can't say weather or not it was warranted. The man received the ticket for shooting a gun because his neighbors are not 500ft away. He did what he thought was necessary. If he felt threatened than he did what he needed to do if it were a robber than we would be aplauding him.

You animal rights people are out of control. If you didn't notice he's an 83 year old man and probably got scared. And all of you are SICK if you think a 86 yr old man deserves to get his butt kicked because he shot a stupid bear. Get a grip on life please. You don't even know his side of the story, maybe the bear has been a nusience for quite sometime and got a little close for comfort. He doesnt need jail time, just a slap on the wrist and the fine will suffice. Get off his back.

So if you live in a home in the vicinity, then why would your post say that you are from N.H?...Maybe because I am not from Yonkers and this site takes it upon itself to assign false information as to a persons true origin. Obviously, you must feel very offended or guilty for telling me to shut up. Maybe you do live in one of those McMansions and are a compulsive shopper/addicted consumer and can't find the will and determination to go to weightwatchers...so the bear must die!!!! Duh!

I am with you 100%. If that bear attacked someone, it would be ok, right? Aren't there other problems to deal with than this?
