Tragic but exciting. What a story. And what an interesting guy. But I'm giving 2 to 1 he'll be moving on.

All the ingredients of a great news story. Vivid descriptions put me, a reader, on scene. Good job, Courant.

The story does what it can...it gives to us descriptive words and does it well. What we can't "appreciate" are the sounds and smells and pervading feeling of despair. I can't even begin to imagine the horror of actually being there.

I think the new criterion for earthquake-proof buildings is that they be built "aloft." But then again, that would leave them vulnerable to strong winds.

Interesting that you mention that. One of my friends when I was in college in the early 80's, told me that in Japan, many of the buildings are built to absorb the shock. His brother lived there and recalls a time when a small earthquake hit, the floor of his apartment had this sort of wave/ripple that went through it.

Yes, thanks for making this "local" and important, forgetting about the 35,000+ that have died. Pathetic.

One Voice: please google the definition of the word "aloft." I think you'll be surprised.

I just heard the Chinks are hiring 10,000,000 English teachers. I think I'll apply. It sounds exciting.

What a tragedy. I feel for the people of China and for all the children that are now orphans, and for the parents that have lost their only child.
But could the fact that since Mr. Bergen, who is from Simsbury, be why this story was put in the Courant??? It kind of makes me wonder.........
