Ok people, I see how hog dog rodeos could piss people off I dont see any point in it really. I do hunt hogs with dogs tho and you need to train your dog befor you take them into the woods..Its really not that big of deal 1 dog 1 hog for a matter of minnets 1 on 1 to teach the dog to "catch" and hold him until you can get there.(hogs arnt defenceless they can split u and ur dog wide open). Hog hunting with dogs is never gona go away its an effective way of geting rid of unwonted hogs that tear up farm land and any land for that matter. I wish you people would go do sumtihng better with your time, go stop killings on the streets and help troubled teens .... all kinds of shit. Stop trying to stop something you know nuthing about, for thoes of you that dont know it's an AWSOME and EXCITING thing to do (hunting in the woods with dogs)(not hog dog rodeos) you wouldent understand, all this hog dog rodeo shit is makeing All hog hunters looks bad and now peope wont to stop hog hunting with dogs and its not like that!! but w.e i dont even care anymore argg i just know its sumtihng i love doing working with the dogs and everthing hog hunting is not just pits catching hogs you have dogs that find them and bay them up and all you just wouldent understand! but anyways im out, I just hade to say sumthing becaus all the people talking about dumb rednecks and how there are so crule and just stupid shit they no nuthing about...any ways yall have to mutch time on ur hands PEACE

Many parents in rural Louisiana. Or Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, and a handful of other states where feral pigs roam.
A weekend highlight for some families in these areas is the so-called "hog dog rodeo." If you miss the homemade tin signs—"Hog Dog Rodeo Tonight! Turn here"—posted on trees along dirt roads, you can still find one of these events. Just listen for the squeals of terror and pain from the pigs and cheers from the audience of parents and children.
Hog dogging, hawg dawgin', hog baiting, hog dog "rodeos": They're all terms for a bloodsport known as hog dog fighting. An owner leads his trained pit bull into an enclosed pen. She lunges and pulls so hard on the leash that she soon stands erect on her hind legs, her face fixed in a snarl. Her guttural growl erases any doubt that she is unsure of her purpose.
At the other end of the ring, the "handler" shoves a feral pig, or hog, through a chute into the pen. He will use a cattle prod if the hog, who has faced these dogs before, hesitates. And just in case the hog had any notion of trying to defend himself, the handler has already taken the precaution of removing his tusks with bolt cutters.
The pit bull’s owner removes her leash. Before you can count to three-one-thousand, the dog tackles the hog in a cloud of dust. Her jaws tear into the hog’s flesh, maybe ripping his snout, tail, or an ear. The hog expresses his pain and fear through loud squeals that echo off the pen's tin walls. The crowd is pleased; the dog pins the hog to the ground in a mere seven seconds. As with a wrestling pin, the mandatory three seconds elapse, and the operator declares the dog victorious. Adults and children cheer for the fast, powerful dog.
However, the dog’s jaws remain attached to the hog’s flesh. After what must seem like an eternity to the hog, people casually make their way over to end the match. If the hog struggles, the handler may give him a sharp boot to the head, then dig his heel into the hog’s chest to still him. He then uses a long, wooden blade called a breakstick to pry the dog's jaws from the hog. It can take up to a minute to release the dog’s grip while the hog continues to writhe in agony and terror.
After the proud owner leads his dog away, the handler may pour apple vinegar into the hog’s wounds. The vinegar supposedly helps the wounds develop scabs so that the hog can be mauled again in a few days.
At the end of the night, the organizer tallies his profits from admission and dog entry fees. And the owners with the fastest dogs leave with trophies and hundreds of dollars in prize money.
Have you watched the "poor" piggy in the pen? ya hes more like 300lbs and slings the dog around like a rag doll. Trust me the hog and dog have a good chance and the both get medical attention afterwards. and not all are pit bulls some are bay dogs like they normally are that just get in the hogs face and bark.. MORON!!!

I live in the upstate of South Carolina and recently the topic of Hog-Dog rodeos has frequently been popping up on the news. As a matter of fact just last week there was an article in the paper about a young female boar that was found in a pile of leaves behind one of the post offices here in the upstate. Some kind hearted indivuals from the Humane society had taken her in and nursed her wounds and pretty much saved her life. Can you guess what kind of wounds this animal had? Kudos if you guessed dog bites! And on top of that.... you guessed it! Her tusks had been cut out! I have seen footage on the news of some undercover video taken at on one of these inhumane rodeos and to anyone who says it is a fair fight between a dog and a hog is evidently on some real good hallucenegetics. The hogs head and ears litterally gets torn to pieces. Not to mention it squealling to death. And to you people who are for this, this is entertaining? And to the people here that keep saying crap like "only in the south" need to think again. There are plenty of yankees down here taking part in this sick crap as well. As far as hunting goes, Im all for it if you do it with a gun or a bow and not a pack of dogs. Like "War Eagle" stated on here earlier, guns don't require food or a vet.

Well said, James. People who stand opposed to hog-dog rodeos are not always animal rights activist or tree huggers, but people with rational thoughts. I've learned more about conservation from hunters than anyone else and most of these people are not your hog-dog crowd. Why give the dog a protective vest and cut the hog's tusks? Why would you cause torture on any of God's creatures? Shoot the hog and eat it, but don't allow your bloodthirsty dogs to mutilate the animal. They had sports like that a long time ago, you know, in ancient Rome.

There is a difference between hog hunting and hog rodeos. Hunting hogs in the wild means they have a chance at escape. Siccing a pitbull on one that is confined to a pen and has no chance of escape isn't a sport; it's cruelty. The gogs also have their teeth removed to lessen the chance of injury to the dog. If people who support this type of event think the rules are fair I invite them to enter a boxing match, but they have to have their hands tied behind their backs.
I'm not even in favor of hunting, but I realize that dogs are sometimes needed to take down a wild boar. The difference is the hog is taken down and the hunter quickly kills it. The spectacle is not put on for a bunch of spectators. There are hunters who are professional and respect their prey, and there are those who just like to see an animal suffer.
You can learn alot from a Canadian. lol

<quoted text>What an idiot. pot bellies dont count as a pig, you cant even make a good sandwich out of them. And what are you smokeing when that stupid thing is "talking" to you. Bring in a 300pound boar hog with 4 inch teeth and put him in your house for just a day and then write back. Keep the comments about your stupid little pig to yourself
I know the difference between a 300 lb boar and a pot bellied pig..believe me..my little baby is only about 150 lbs...some people would say she is a HOG..and she is..and I'd thank you very much to remember that I don't have to keep my comments to myself..and I never do.

I see pattern with all of you hog killers also like to use the word queer...I guess you don't like gays either..maybe you'd like to turn the dogs loose on them as well...backwoods redneck idjits.

I will write to each and every congressman, senator and government office that I can to protest this "sport"..I will also do whatever I can to help see to it that the "Pit Bul" breed dies out.
These dogs are dangerous and a menace to society.

I am educated, BBA. I have two bird dogs, and enjoy upland and waterfowlhunting. I also have a bulldog that catches hogs. I am also a USMC vetran and former law enforcement. I have seen alot worse than a bulldog doing what he has been bred to do for the better part of a milenea.

I aslo wonder if anyone so opposed to hog hunting has had a field or pasture destroyed by wild hogs? Or have you been fishing at the river and had to climb a tree to escape a mean old tusker?

One more thing. The reason for catching the hog with a dog is that in the south we have huge swamps that are densly wooded. It is hard to get a clean shot on a hog. hogs are smart and usually know you are there. Catchig the hog with an american bulldog allows you to tie up the hog and transport it to a pen where you can "feed it out". This means feeding the hog corn and suppliments and vaccinating the hog against disease. wild hogs do carry disease which can be dangerous to humans.

Southern man, I think the Hog/dog rodeos are more the subject of debate. I 've never had a problem with people who hunt and hunt by the rules, but hog/dog rodeos are nothing short of cruelty to animals. I have shot and trapped wild hogs myself, but I 've never needed a dog to catch them. Yes, they will destroy pasture land in a hurry. I never said I was against hunting hogs, but I stick to my guns because thats all I need. The rodeo is another matter. It is intentional cruelty, if proven intentional Cruelty to Animals is a felony in Alabama.

I wish I could hunt Yankees and Queers with my hog dogs during deer season when I cant hog hunt. I also hate you piss drinking daughters of circus whores that hug trees. To all my fellow hog hunters ,you ever see these dorks writing this stuff. They are probably skinny pale computer game playing retards that couldnt beat there way out of a wet paper bag.The only reason Im writing on here is because Im at work, if I wasnt I would be catching me some swine!!! These hogs ruine acres of corn feilds a night around here. These farmers are trying to make a living and these hogs hurt them big time. They ruin corn, peanuts and grain feilds. They also root up the pastures the cows graze in. SO dont hate what you dont understand. As for you other hog hunters, these dorks are just intimidated by us. Not everybody id tough enough to be a grunter hunter. Any a@# hole can shoot a deer but it takes ba@#'s to catch a hog!!! SQUEEEAAALLLLL!
