Man Won't Buy Gas For 31 Days

Brian LaFave couldn't care less how high gasoline prices climb these days - he's parked his pickup truck and is refusing to buy gas for a month, possibly longer.

My wife and I stopped driving on Jan.1,2008. We walk or dont go! Work is a 45 minute walk acrss town for my wife, but as we are moving to the other end of town this month she will be withen 10 minutes of walking. In a small town with a pop. of 10k during school yr and a pop 0f about 2.5k during summer you can see town isnt big enough to warrant driving.
Of course grocery shopping is interesting with a 3 month old in arms too!

I read about you in The Buffalo News (Buffalo, NY). As someone who commutes 40 miles round-trip every day to a workplace that can't be accessed by public transportation, I envy you -- but more importantly I heartily applaud you! I wish it were possible to bike to work.
And I'm very impressed with your willingness to donate money that would have gone to oil companies to the poor in Africa.
I and two other folks recently formed an all-volunteer non-profit to support the impoverished Bagishu people in eastern Uganda. Their average annual income is a mere $6 per day. If you haven't yet selected a charity in Africa to support, please consider ours. One of our three main goals focuses on children. I invite you to peruse our web site, www.globalafricanvillage.org .
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at sgreen24@juno.com.
And good luck on your gas-free life! I hope you can sustain it for a long time.

I have to say-it is nice when people can NOT drive-when people can NOT have to put gas in their vehicle-

BUT-what yanks my nerdle is when people act like because I DO have to drive-I have to drive a big vehicle as well to hall tools and things-I dont have that damn luxury!

It sucks-when your job is so dependent on gas-and I cant afford to retrain for some other type of job at this point.

Thanks for letting me vent-

OH-and if you drive a prius-go the damn speed limit-people driving 40mph in these things with that smug "I am better than you" look on their faces-slowing down 100s of cars and wasting more fuel than they save-get over yourselves....

also-if you by a hybrid or even an electric car-you may want to research the damage done by the batteries to the environment-snobs-

I am riding my bike to work more, and thinking more about how to save gas when I drive. It is pretty bad when you can pay $40 to fill a Ford Escort! My car doesn't use much gas, and I live close enough to get to work at least without a car, but even I feel the need to be careful with using fuel.

What a crock. This guy isn't donating his money to anything! His car is probably broke down and he's going to use the money that otherwise woulda been on gas, to repair his POS. He's just looking for his 5 mins of fame.

KUDOS to you. I commend all who are able to take a stand and having children myself, I know what a hassle being without a vehicle can be. Although, I realize it is not feasible for everyone to do this, could you imagine the impact if we all COULD stay away from the pumps for 31 days? Wow!:o)

I did (go without gas) when I was in hospital for major intestinal surgery. I never bought any gasoline all the time I was in there. So what do I want, the Nobel peace Prize?

There should be a tax break for anyone living within a 5 mile radius of their work. Then a slightly lower tax break for living within a 10-mile radius. The tax break could make it more affordable for folks to live closer to work, they could walk or ride their bikes more often, less gasoline would be used, thus saving these people more money that they could turn around and put into housing or whatever, thereby improving the economy and eventually lowering gas prices (less demand). AND....it'd help with the obesity problem we have in this country as well.

I think it's great this guy is trying an alternative to using gasoline.

I am surprised by the negative comments. Why do you feel threatened by someone who is trying to save oil? He is not criticizing people who continue to drive gas-guzzlers unnecessarily. This is just something he is doing for himself and for the environment.

And why the jab at the hybrid drivers? Probably jealousy. Again the hybrid driver is trying to do what it good for the environment, because the emissions from hybrids are substantially lower than other vehicles.

Knowing where you live and most likely work its quite easy to understand how green with envy you are.

I commute 85 miles round trip/day. My wife is fortunate enough to telecommute 3 days a week. As soon as she pays the life insurance premium, I guess I'll start riding the bike to work. Drivers down here use motorcycles as moving targets!

I live in Manassas and drive daily to D.C. I don't have a nice commute like you may think :) I myself go through a tank of gas every 4 days.

Unfortunately, a few people here and there aren't going to make a difference on the price of gas, but at least they'll save a few bucks and lose a few pounds trying.

My small suv runs on 10% e-gas, but my problem:

#1 that my milage has dropped from 24 miles per
gallon to 20 miles per gallon.

#2 I have even lost about 20% of the power I had
before.

#3 SUV has been in the shop to be checked and
they can find no problem with anything.

#4 So now we use more gas which means more money
for the gas company.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

You fuel clearly has less energy per unit volume as your milage and power indicates. Simple physics, best conclusion.
