1 I think that there is something in this, although contracting services should never be regarded as a means of moving the onus of responsibility off on someone else. A contract should include sufficient accountability provisions, not to mention in-house follow-up to ensure that all contracted responsibilities are being handled in a timely fashion. Contracting has been regarded by some as a panacea (frequently due to decreased labor costs when moving out of a unionized public sector). It is not. There are in fact times when it makes more sense to take advantage of efficiencies of scale and expertise in a field. I think we stand to see this in the outsourcing of food service--which the district has been unable to get its arms around for many years. Within the district there is a tendancy to move former principals into administrative positions running some of these diverse areas--which really benefit more from experience and expertise in a particular field. So long as this is the case, both in-house and outsourced services are likely to suffer |

2 Wow, what a profound level of BS is loaded up here. The requirement for background checks is universal--there are no exceptions for aliens (legal or illegal). This is state law with regard to the people who drive school buses (Obama has nothing to do with it). Furthermore, for some time all employers have been required to see proof of either citizenship or legal worker status before hiring anyone. Now--proficiency in speaking English is a very poor way to make a judgment about whether someone is in this country legally. Certainly I agree that someone driving a school bus must be able to communicate adequately with the children--in fact it would be wonderful to sufficient bi-lingual drivers to ensure that children who are learning English as a Second Language have someone who can communicate in their first language if needed--but I know that bi-lingual workers are in short supply in many other critical fields (health care, education, first responders, etc). This reality is not helped out by the "let them speak English or go home" attitude. Finally, I grew up, proudly, in "a nation of immigrants." The fact that my ancestors have long ago both assimilated and contributed to the American culture does not give me the right to shut the door on others with contributions to make. |

1 I don't believe that you read the article, if you had you would have seen that each and every one of their drivers have had a background check along with a DOT Physical (to get the health card). School bus drivers must have a Commercial Drivers License. To have a CDL the driver must speek English good enough to read and comprehend road signs and traffic laws. There is another choice that you can make, if you can afford to send your child to private school,(I am glad that you can)then maybe you can afford to hire a real american to drive her there. Now if we could only figure out what a real American is??? |

1 I somewhat agree with you. If we were in their country we would have to follow their policies. Our government gives the foriegners to much as it is, and they take what money they make back to their countries. They should have to be legal citizens to work here and receive benefits. Speak clear English outside of their homes. We are not permitted prayer in school anymore, so why should they be allowed to have their time to pray? Just my opinion. |

Why did a forum about a bus company turn into a debate on immigration?

Actually, the school board elected not to renew the First Student contract. However, First Student then bought out one of the other companies that Columbus had a contract with--thus buying up their contract. Not exactly anything in Dr. Harris' contol. |

Here is a interesting fact most are not aware of. First Group, the parent company of First Student is not a American company. Our tax dollars go to the UK.
